I have learned a lot from the lounge, so I thought I would try to contribute back if I could. If anyone is interested in Barbour jackets check out Aarons of Eastham?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s web page, they have selected jacket styles 40% to 50% off. I ordered a Beaufort Original jacket on Thursday, it arrived Saturday and they did not charge for shipping. I always wanted to try a Barbour but could not bring myself to spend the money; this gave me the opportunity to give them a try without the paying full retail. I have been very happy with the jacket so far. BTW I am in no way associated with Aarons; I am just trying to pass on a good deal. My apologies if I posted in the wrong place .

Barbour Waxed Gentleman's Jackets...

Made from lovely waxed Egyptian cotton. But be aware, they are not very warm. However, you can buy an extra fleecy piece that clips into the inside. Otherwise, go vintage and wear some layers and a big wooly jumper!

If memory serves right, in the 1930s and 40s, J. Barbour and Sons of South Shields, England, made waxed waterproofs for the submarine service of the British Royal Navy. The submariners would have just worn warm clothing underneath.

Very much the English country gents look these days. Look good with a pair of green wellies! and a few labrador or springer gun dogs.

It seems to be a fine jacket, well made and attractive styling and layering is working well for our mild Houston winter. One thing I do like is that it goes well with both business casual dress and jeans. I asked about the liner for this jacket and was told that they were on backorder, but I will order one at some point. One question though, when does the smell go away?

The smell will fade as the waxy coating on your Barbour drys out. But, it will not go away completly.
I have had my Barbour Border for about 10 years now and if you re wax it (to re waterproof it) the smell will return!
The liner clips into the jacket. The only drawback with the liner is the fact that it is for the body only and does not come down the sleeves! So I tend to leave it out ans wear a sweater or something similar when the weather turns cold.
Either that or a repro WW11 sheepskin flying jacket.

I haven't had the chance to try on a waxed Barbour jacket (I just own the Barbour Tartan Galloway jacket) but I probably will soon (I noticed a Barbour store in Boston's Newbury street).

I know there are much cheaper alternatives out there (and perhaps of better quality?). I don't know too much about wax cotten quality but are Barbour's wax cottons the absolute best in quality out there for the money?

Belstaff makes the "Trialmaster" in waxed cotton- but they cost mucho dinero.
Does anyone actually own a Barbour "International"? I'm curious to hear your comments.

I'm not really looking for GoreTex type performance, more something to keep the rain off and not get overheated.

1. It breathes somewhat, but if you ie. walk fast enough with your dog, surely back of your shirt will be moist. Normal walking, motorcycling etc, no problem. It breathes enough to my taste.

2. Haven't yet tried on motorcycle, but properly waxed should be watertight, at least my waxcotton duster is. I mean 1 hour on a motorcycle 100 km/h in pouring rain. International is meant for motorcycling.
Normal outdoor activities, it's as good as my raincoat.

3. I hope I could answer you this one correctly. Mine is size 46, I wear 42-44 jackets. I bought it to be worn over my leathers. Fits over my leather jacket, that is Legendary Black Horse, size 44, modern cut.
I wore it during this winter with a fleecejacket and was able to wear t-shirt+sweater under it comfortably.

I got nice service when I bought new belt for it from Barbour. You should ask them about fitting/sizing. They are just e-mail away

Really appreciate the info. on the size- I'm never really sure how that's going to translate from one manufacturer to another.
I usually wear a 46 suit jacket, so it sounds like I might want to go with an XXL- which is about what I figured.

I bought an International this winter, and I love it. Bought a 44 because the arm length on the 42 (I have a 42 chest) seemed oddly short, and the thing fits perfectly. Also shelled out for the furry liner which is cozy but makes the fit a bit off. I've been wearing it all through this horribly cold late winter weather because, apart from one day when the wind-chill was -30, it was as warm as I needed it to be. All in all a really good buy, and a true classic.

I like the inset sleeves better on the border jackets, but I don't like the long lengths of them. If the international jacket had the same long collars as the bedale/beaufort/border line (though I understand that it's a matter of function against the wind).

Until they release a bedale-like wax cotton jacket with inset sleeves, I'll hold off for now.

Yes, the collar is different on the International- its meant to be buckled up- sort of like a mandarin collar- against the elements, but it won't interfere with wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Hadn't thought about the sleeves- I'll have to check that out.

By the way, there are currently several good deals on Barbour jackets on Ebay- you might want to check them out. Some were really good bargains.

I have two Barbour Jackets. The one I got in England (long coat to cover the saddle for riding) has short sleeves, and the one I got here (in the States) has a more normal fit in the sleeves. It is a riding jacket as well, but in a 3/4 length. Not sure if Barbour made the one for export with longer sleeves to fit the longer armed Americans or not. An English friend of mine saw how the one I got in England fit me, and he said it looked like it was made to fit an Englishman. I do have long arms.

Just a heads up that the sleeves may be longer or shorter depending on where you purchase the jacket, or it may just be the model of the jacket. May want to have the seller give you a sleeve measurement bdfore you buy.

They're water resistant until the wax wears off, then you'll get some wet spots. They have zero breathability, so if you run a little warm you might want to take a pass.

Yeah, I'm pretty much finding that to be true with the Belstaff "Trialmaster"s I've been looking at. They look cool, but breatability is practically nil.

So I'm thinking of settling down and ordering the bedale as my raincoat to deal with the dreadful weather we're having in New England these days.
Though does anyone know or have this particular Barbour logo on the pockets of their Barbour jacket? I'm not sure if this is an 'official' new logo of Barbour or if it's something that someone has added on. I've never seen this before on their jackets (just the embroidered "Barbour" name). Perhaps this is an old model?

I think I'll contact Barbour to be sure. Everything else is right on spec.

*update* - I just got off the phone with Barbour and they said it's not one of their logos but perhaps like you said, a company/bulk buy. I think I'll still get it anyway. I'm more interested in it's quality and functionality.
