Ran across this shot from the new film ''Australia'',
you reckon she is wearing an Akubra? :D

*Wild guess* here, but yes, it's an Akubra.

A modified Squatter, to be more precise; with a larger ribbon and the edge removed. It's a great looking hat!

I think the crown is too high. I know they dug up some older blocks recently. I suspect those hats came from those warehouse finds.

In some pics I've seen, Kidman's looks like an old Federation with a different bow. Perhaps an ancestor?

As much as I love hats, when I see Nicole Kidman, I can't pull my eyes away from her face long enough to notice anything else. ;)

Then again Rosie could be that good. ;)

Yes, it can be seen to have those nice, straighter, unexaggerated angles that one could get out of the old Federation, though; and the brim definitely doesn't look too short for the rest of the hat, either.

Maybe they added more brim to a Fed IV for Nicole's hat? [huh] Don't know. There are a lot of Akubras in this one.

Still looks good. Sharp angles that flatter her well (as if she needs it). I'm with you, 1911. The hats, in general, become sort of secondary when she's under one. ;)

From what we know yup the Squatter is the star, but there are plenty of Sydney Fedoras, Slouch's for the war scenes, and Snowy Rivers etc... for the droving scenes.

Akubra press release

HATS OFF TO A BEAUTIFUL AUSTRALIA
With a history of Australian hat making dating back more than a century, the craftsmen behind the iconic Akubra brand have taken a step back in time to help create a unique range of period inspired hats for Baz Lurhmann’s epic Australia.

With an order for close to 450 hats for the feature film, Akubra custom made key pieces under the direction of headwear specialist Rosie Boylan. Working with Costume Designer Catherine Martin and a team of milliners, Boylan created striking silhouette headwear for the principal cast and 100’s of extra’s that profiled life in 1930’s Australia.

“From our perspective, working with Rosie was a great collaboration. She first came to us in 2005 with a very clear vision of what was needed. We enjoyed the creative process and it’s exciting to see it all coming to fruition now, knowing we’re a small but recognisable part of what will undoubtedly be Australian cinematic history,” said Managing Director Stephen Keir, the fifth generation of Keir to take the helm at the family owned and operated Akubra.
For her part the unassuming Boylan says, “With the men’s hats, my role was to create a range of strong character looks that carried the epic Hollywood styling of the film. I took the cinematic vision and worked with Akubra to translate their classic hats into customised pieces.”

Many of the Akubra hats supplied were hand shaped and aged by Rosie and her team who also created trims and wide ribbon banding that was typical of the era.

“We sent fresh, new open crowned hats off and they then had to make them look like they’d been worn through anything from war to years in the outback. Our hats are renowned for their durability so I’m sure ageing them was an art in itself,” added Stephen Keir.

This isn’t Akubra’s Hollywood debut with past movie credits including The Man from Snowy River, Crocodile Dundee and Bodyline.

the art of

I'd like to see her work 'aging' hats..once upon a time I was in a beer ad set in the 50's, so I turned up wearing my own battered hat and jackie howe, the wardrobe department had NOTHING that looked even remotely as authentic as my stuff, and after the shoot I ended up swapping my beater for a much better hat because they said there was no way to really duplicate the look effectively, and they were a seasoned crew with major film credits. The real thing was what they hunted for.....

FIRST time I saw the trailer I said to myself "that's an Akubra".

It's interesting that we are able to recognize Akubras when they could just as well have been any other types of hats.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. It's just the costuming and how it looks sepia... very retro like I like. i wish the new Indy movie did so well with the costume distressing.

Well we'll see how the story is.

I'm still not a fan of those surgically altered lips... just too puffy. I couldn't get over them when i saw her with the new ones in The Golden Compasse.
