It costs a few bucks but a recent book published and available on Amazon/Kindle....Brim & Crown. It lists custom hat makers in North America and Europe. Perhaps more choice than you want but it is a great resource. Here in the Lounge: Gannon, NorthWest Hats, Wolfbrae, Hufvud, all have their own threads. Use Google -"the fedora lounge and the hatters name and the threads will pop up. Phoenix, VS, BlackSheep are others but have retired or on hiatus.

I have come to seek counsel. After a recent fishing trip whence the windy conditions kept snatching the hat from my head, I decided to pick up something new (to me) to alleviate the situation. I quickly found a pretty little thing on everyone's favorite auction site. A little rough around the edges, but nothing I couldn't handle. She came to me looking fine, but having some sweatband issues. Some conditioning and stitching has seemed to stabilize these. A quick clean and some steam et voila! My question, of course, is if anyone could provide any details as to age or model, et cetra. Thank you, all!

Not sure about make and model but it looks like a fantastic hat and you did a good job at cleaning it up. Don’t forget to put a new stampede string on before your next fishing trip.

Got the string on order. I wanted a "Stratoliner-esque" look but I'm more of a Resistol guy. And I wanted it to be more... substantial? for outdoor use. I'm not really a "western" guy, at all, but it's nice felt and a bit heavier.

Dating hats can be tough and I know zip about Resistols but some may chime in to be more specific. The red liner and the stylized O's in Resisitol put it in a particular time frame and the liner tip appears to be of the 'onionskin' variety and not cellophane which was introduced in 1953. I'm curious if the holes for the stampede string were original to the hat. If it's aftermarket, it was well done. Never seen another just like it. It's as cool as a fan. The 5X is a quality designation, say a step up from a 3X during that period.

Nice job on tidying it up.

If you show clearer photos of the logos on the sweat and the two labels seen under the sweat, perhaps FL'ers can help you answer your questions.

Post it in the "Resistol Roundup" and the "Western Anyone" threads, too.

Is there a factory re-order sticker behind the sweat band and up under the edge of the liner? That might be another clue.

That store (Ring and Brewer) and the "Self Conforming" sweat stamp style was used throughout the 1940s (based on some newspaper ads and tax info). It may have been used later as well -- the store was certainly still around.

1941:

The stylized "O" was part of the 1943 trademark filing and, from what I can tell, lasted through the 1950s.

That, with the liner tip @Bamaboots mentioned, might help narrow it down some. This ad for a "Deming" model is from 1952 and does mention "Resistol Western".

I wonder if the "Raw Hide Felts" westerns transitioned to this Resistol "Western" branding or was concurrent at some point.

I have a couple of Raw Hide Felts with no direct mention of "Resistol" (one has the stand-alone "Self Conforming" that was trademarked in 1950 by Byer-Rolnick and the other has "XXXXX BEAVER" in a similar style):

There is another Raw Hide Felts in "The Resistol Roundup" thread (also from Ring and Brewer) that does mix Raw Hide Felts on the liner with "Resistol" on the sweat. This sweat stamp is more of a mid-to-late 1940s thing (I think). Seems like there was some discussion about the "h" in "hats" going through the stylized "O" or not.

The 5X was displayed differently:

1945 ad with the "h" going through an un-stylized "O". This logo could predate the 1943 trademark and was still being used in advertising.

I want to say your hat is from the early 1950s, but I have most likely just confused the issue (and assumed something I shouldn't have). Regardless -- it's a great hat you have there!

I’ve learned to listen to that voice that warns against folding back a sweatband. It’s great to see the tags and get the information, but it’s been the end of more that one sweatband for me. Of course, that meant the damage was already there by not obvious, but still it’s a shame to lose an old sweatband.

I'd expect "beaver" means 100% beaver. How malleable is the felt?

When I put it on for the first time, it felt like a circus tent on my head. However, the hat seems to be very large in comparison to the other trilby. Now, wearing the hat feels like sitting in a very comfortable chair. I use the cork stripes.

The brim slighty touches both ears. The center of the crown touches the highest point of my face.

What is your head size? Why did you buy the XXL? That translates to a 7 3/4" which is a very large head size?
