I'm looking at some of the Amish made straw hats. I get that they are not very refined or heirloom pieces, but does anyone out there have insights? I'm thinking of a yard work hat or maybe something I could wear to the lake.

Where do you store your hats?

I have installed shelving in my bedroom and have 10 hats all resting on vintage display hat stands. I have another 10 or so on the shelves in the wardrobe. And a couple in hat boxes and a couple on the hat/coat rack in our hallway. But my hats are now battling my wife's shoes and handbags for space. So I'm looking for some creative hat storage ideas.

Obviously reducing the number of hats isn't an option. I now know that reducing "our" shoe or handbag collection isn't an option either

Currently store hats in hat boxes. I like the idea of shelving.

Try Lehmans for Amish straw hats. Plenty of Amish in my neck of the woods, I can ask one, if you don't like Lehman's authentic Amish hats.

I suppose it depends on the type of weather you would wear your straw in. A former border of mine worked for John Deere, and he wore an Amish straw hat while out on the mower -- our climate is very hot and dry.

Also, I used to go to the lake all the time, and I wouldn't recommend a straw hat without a laminated finish (toyo and the like) for such an excursion. I'm notoriously bad at dropping things in the lake... including clothing accessories... and untreated straw will lose it's shape when soaked. Also -- since toyo hats are waterproof, they won't stain from your perspiration soaking through the sweat band.

So- If you're looking for a straw that can go from yard work to the fishing boat, keep you covered, maintain its shape, and give you a stylish silhouette, I would recommend a Toyo straw from Dobbs, Goorin, Baileys, or Stacy Adams.

I just bought a used hat and I was wondering if the brain trust here could give me some insights on it. I'm not expecting much for the price. It is a Herbert Johnson that was listed as an Indiana Jones hat, but there was no mention of it being a Poet. Can anyone provide anything on this hat?

I won't have in in my hands for a week or so. The ribbon and color look wrong for an Indy hat. It's hard to tell about the shape. The brim is approximately 2 5/8 inches. I don't know much more. I'll have it reblocked and hope to add it to my rotation.

I agree that it does not look like an Indy hat. I'm hoping that someone on the forum has one or knows what it is. I do like a good mystery.

Unfortunately the Herbert Johnson website isn't too much help =( I expected "Trafalgar" to be a model listed somewhere but so far no luck =(
