does anyone here happen to know what brand (and possibly model) of hat the artist joseph beuys wore?

a fedora-style felt hat was his trademark. he wore it constantly. i was curious what it actually was.

Well...I googled him since I didn't know who you were talking about.

Google images brings up several images with a stingy brim hat with a relatively low crown. It's basically impossible to identify a maker, much less a model designation, without seeing pictures of the inside of the hat.

There are legions of hats with 2" ribbons and 2" brims.

i understand. i was hoping that someone here might know specifically about beuys since he was both a famous artist and a devoted (read: obsessive) hat wearer.

As i understand it from a little research, he bought his hats from the UK at Lockhatters see above post perhaps the homburg with the brim flipped down
You might want to call them or even better commission one from all the excellent hatters on this board if you are serious

Hi Monika,I'm not aware of a "custom"hat store close to your father.
To come close to what you want to do you will probably need to contact a custom hatter,there are several here on the Lounge.Their contact and fitting methods will likely vary but in the end your father will have a great hat made to his order.

I passed it up because the brine was wider than I wanted and the color wasn't what I wanted. Now I'm thinking of ordering one in grey. Does anyone know if it's possible to have the bound brim trimmed to a slightly shorter raw brim? Also, what are your experiences with the current stetsonian? Anyone recommend it? How does it compare to the fed IV by akubra?

If you're just gonna cut the brim off anyway, yeah, go for a Fed.

I find the finishes on Akubras generally just a bit less refined than the average Stetson. But on durability, no contest. The Akubra will outlast its wearer, in all probability!

Little better finish on the Fed Deluxe vs the Imperial quality finish and its just as nice (if not nicer...) then the current quality of the Stetsonian.

I'll let you know as soon as I get my Gray Stetsonian I've been waiting for since April. However, given your specs, I'd go with the Fed also. I wouldn't spend $200 on a new Stetson and then trim the brim.

When bidding/buying a vintage hat that you are not able to try on; is it wise to go up a size to account for shrinkage? Or, do you buy what you think may be your size and stretch?

Like shoes and shirts, different models fit differently, but have not found shrinking over time to be a factor. I buy my normal size and assume I may need to stretch or shrink it a bit to get a perfect fit.

Yup. I've had pretty good luck sticking with my size in vintage. But pay attention to the seller's comments and if they offer measurements. Send them a note asking for more details (What size do you wear? How does it fit to you?). There are a couple of eBay sellers who I now trust their descriptions pretty well.

You can surely trim the Stetsonian,but I'd just go for the FED.
