I'll Lock Up

Greetings!
New member here. I was searching for some hat info and found this cool forum. Perhaps someone here can identify this hat? I'd like to have one with a sharp crease and a narrow brim like this but so far haven't found anything particularly close. A Stetson Mercury and a couple from Christ'y models seem sort of in the ballpark but. This guy is Prince Michael of Kent so it may be bespoke. If so, how would one describe such a hat to be ordered or shaped?

Presuming he bought it in the UK, there's only a handful of brands, and AFAIK, all are manufactured by Christy's.

This Lock looks pretty darn close: https://www.lockhatters.com/collections/men-trilbies-porkpie-hats/products/wetherby-trilby

The other London Hatters are Bates and Herbert Johnson.

I’m intrigued and tempted by this Lagomarsino nutria that has popped up on a local online market over here. Brent @deadlyhandsome, are you still as impressed with them as you were in your post back in 2018?
Anyone else have experience with these hats. This one is going for ¥7500 (about $US70)...Thanks in advance.
Nutria, rabbit, either way for $70 US I'd buy it if it was size 7-1/2 (60 cm). And, uh, you ultimately decided against it...and told me where to find it...and... :D

Hello everyone,

It's been a while!

Quick question, I've read in one book that, I quote, "big companies employ POWDERS to hide any blemishes that might develop." This was about the pouncing process and how blemishes can develop if overpounced.

My question is, what are those Powders?

As with most things related to hats and hatmaking the recipe for those hat powders was a trade secret. As far as I know they were the consistency of say a talcum powder and in the colour of the felt that needed work. That raises the question how they got the colour to match the various felt colours. We don't know. The powder was worked into the felt during the pouncing and luring phase to cover up blemishes or inconsistent dyeing of the felt. I've had some powder come off when I dunked a dirty hat in a naphta bath. Here's link to a thread with some more info:

Over the past several weeks, my Instagram feed has been showing me Garrahan Hats updates. The hats look pretty nice, but I can't find any additional details, such as prices, etc. Their Facebook page has plenty of photos, but there doesn't seem to be a website or any way to get any information.

Does anybody know any more?

New to me, but I like some of his hats. I sent him an email and asked himself to introduce himself here. He got back to me quickly and sounded interested. Hope he becomes a member and tells us about what he’s doing.

New Question, I just purchased a Mallory on the net, like new, nice hat. But, I don't know if it is a wool felt or fur felt, feels like fur felt but doesn't say anywhere. All it says besides Mallory is Torino Quality. I like the hat but if it's wool felt I will try to not get it really wet, it's a keeper either way.

Can you post photos; screenshots from the seller or your own?

I’ve learned to avoid the Mallory hats that have any mention of Stetson printed on them (e.g., Mallory by Stetson).

I’ve yet to hold one of the very old wool or wool blend hats from when they were finished to a very high level. I believe they were mostly European. After having handled may more recent hats (1950s and later) in wool, I can tell immediately at a touch if it’s fur or wool. Sometimes photos still deceive me and every now and then I’ll screw up and buy a wool hat. More often, a fur felt hat will be listed as being wool and You can get a great deal.

If it's a Mallory and not a Mallory by Stetson, it's fur.

In a good way?

That'll depend on how many simoleans it takes to own one.

Foolproof method. Put it in a car trunk on a hot day for an hour or so. Open the trunk, and if it smells like wet fur felt ..

I learned this by happenstance.

I have one older woolfelt…. I think 40s era. (Not Mallory) Completely different from current or even 60s or 70s wool. Extremely obedient stuff that reacts very similarly to older fur felt…. The biggest difference is it is a rougher texture to my older furs.

I’ve read some of Steve’s evaluations of vintage European wool felts hats. Someday I want to work with one just for the experience.
