Put your thinking caps on hat aficionados, does the hat compliment the outfit, or vice versa? My missus, Tina, has a new lady's fedora, she has been wondering what to compliment it with. Like me, she likes to create an "ensemble." This is her new hat:

She has been going through her catalogue of vintage patterns and this is what she has chosen. Now I love her choice of dress, I also love the style, but red & blue? Wrong kind of hue, or am I just being a tad too traditionalist?

I will continue the quest....success will be mine....but at some point, time spent to achieve success over and over again.....will translate to a cost....then I will weight in on how much work must be done against the cost of $8. I will keep the link handy as my backup.....and I thank you for sharing it.

I was also curious about this a few weeks ago too.

My new angle of attack that may require a few attempts, is basing the dimensions off a conical cylinder.

Where the bottom circumference should be approximate to hat size (and then some, allowing for overlap) and the top circumference and height could be measured from an existing liner. Although hats are not cylinders exactly, I think this may give a workable technique.

I believe I'm correct about the foot operated spinners.
I took a pottery class on Saturday mornings back in 72 or 73. Once you get a pottery wheel in motion keeping it spinning is more like rocking your leg than pumping it or pedaling. You also have a lot of control of speed.
I'm still trying to build other tools, but have assumed that is how I will power my spinner.

There are instructions for a bucket hat, as I mentioned, including a link to printable patterns, online. It was helpful, but I did still have to tweak it. I had a bunch of paper wedges that I taped together, trying to also have overlap like liners have. Then I had to figure out to cut satin smoothly with scissors, even though a crosscut saw was more like my first efforts. Finally, I had to sew it using a thrift store sewing machine I just bought. I actually learned to muddle through on my mom's sewing machine as a teenager a bit, but it was flat seams, not an oval tip being sewn to a .... tube?
It was frustrating, but the finished product was acceptable for my first one. The problem is, it was quite a while ago now, so I'm going to be learning all over when I tackle the second one.
I'm on my laptop, but will add pictures to this post later from my phone.

My last response was a little flippant, distracted by the gams. That's a bold red. Perhaps you should convince her to consider a deeper blue, more of a navy. I don't know. Maybe those primary color reds and blues were the cat's pajamas in the 40's. My eyes experienced it all in black and white. My more modern instincts see the bold red against a deeper background like navy, or maybe charcoal. Eyes would be drawn to the hat, not the gams.

All of this is great.....I do remember coming across the thread of making blocks and flanges with foam in a bag.....I have sketched out the dimension I will need...for the top, ring and height.
I was discussing this with a co-worker on creating a shell with a 3D printer...line it with shrink wrap and fill with low expansion spray foam.....I am also going to try carving up some high density insulation foam....I can dance on this stuff with very little deformation.
Will share pics as the experiments succeed and/or fail....

Thanks for the link. I didn't find all that much useful information though on what exact type of sandpaper to use unless it actually doesn't matter that much. One person mentioned using 1200 and 1500 grit, which I think is usually the car type of sandpaper?

Those are grits you are more likely to find for automotive body work. Woodwork doesn't usually go finer than 220. Finer work, done between coats of finish, usually are accomplished with steel wool, or some of the modern pads a lot like the green ones you use on dishes.
Even so, 1200, much less 1500, are so fine that car guys will have moved to polishing compounds well before that.
Maybe glass polishers would use something that fine. I did some work with plastic years ago. We wet sanded to 600, then polished.

We're all learning together.
Maybe what we learn is that we can't out think what a long history of hatmaking figured out years ago. If so, it will also be a valuable lesson.

I "converted" this hat for my wife, Vicki (that isn't her, BTW). It's wool, and a Nine West hat, which is a step up from a lot of women's hats. It was a Boss of the Plains clone when I brought it home for her, with a flat brim, open crown with small dents, and a cream mid ribbon and bow. She thought it was too Billy Jack, so I bashed and flanged it for her, then put in a fitted leather sweat and and liner.
She picked that hat band. I begged her not to make me put it on, but finally gave in.
The picture is to show the liner though.

I started making this one for her, more of a reverse conversion. A Sovereign velour alpine I was turning into a compact "Gus" creased western.
She doesn't like it though, so it was on the back burner in straw season.

She made this dress a few years back for our trip on The Orient Express. The hat she reworked to compliment her attire. I was trying to visualise this with a red hat, but the two dress styles are so very different. Agent Carter is coincidental but I do admit that the appearance of red & blue worn in such a way can be striking.

I remember that dress and those pictures. Your wife looks fantastic. She also clearly knows how to put an ensemble together. I'm a little embarrassed that I made any suggestions at all, but you did ask.
That blue is a lot like the one modeled in the other picture. The new hat with the dress she already made should help you sort out the color palette, but she might have asked your opinion in part for your sake. Really good women do those things, even when they already know the correct answer.

Gannon is indeed from Oregon. I just placed an order (fedora in Bone) and the queue is only 8 weeks! Gannon’s website isn’t much to look at, but then you can call and talk with Michael and the two of you can design your hat. You can be as involved as you want or you can leave the details up to Michael. My problem is that once I’ve committed to a custom from Gannon I start thinking...for just $75 more I can get it in 100% beaver....

Now, if you just have to have an electric blue fur felt fedora then Agnoulita is your shop!
