Hello everyone, I have a question about aero jackets with buttons, like a teamster, etc..how do the buttons feel? how strong are they made? were there any cases that they came off the jacket? I have two aero jackets with buttons, timster and cheyenne, and I love them very much, I always go buttoned up..how reliable is this? thanks.

Hi Alex, I have two buttoned Aero jackets: a Mariner in FQHH and a Teamster in Badalassi. When the leather is new and stiff I would avoid buttoning them. Otherwise I don't see any problem.
I only had once an issue with the buttons in my Mariner: in a fully crowded train a button got caught between two seats and actually broke; neither the leather nor the thread were damaged. Repaired free of charge at Aero.
The leather football buttons at my Teamster seem robust but if I ordered again I'd go with the plastic buttons instead.
I love the buttoned longer leather coats and I think you don't have to worry about the buttons.

I have a question about the Battered Seal Horsehide from Aero.

Is it quite similar to the Tumbled Brown? I'm wanting to get another jacket from Aero, eventually and already owning a Highwayman in Tumbled Brown and a Wayfarer in Battered Tan I would really like another colour of jacket that isn't too similar to what I already have.

I know it is darker than the Tumbled Brown but as it wears would it have a similar look to Tumbled Brown?

The CXL is the better of the two leather IMO. Color will vary from batch to batch. CXL feels oily and Battered Seal feels dry waxy. CXL will always have more depth than the battered seal which can look artificial sometimes. Battered Seal is easier to wear, CXL needs warming up, even when tumbled. Two very different leather types, but CXL feels more premium for the same money. CXL have insane creases. Batter seal is more meh.

The battered seal you have there looks a lot lighter than I was expecting. I know the lighting etc can play a part in that, I thought it would have been darker though.

I have a sample piece of Seal Jerky and that is pretty dark, I'd have thought the Battered Seal would have been roughly the same colour.

I do love the CXL Brown, but I'm just wanting varying colours on each jacket, CXL Brown and Battered Tan being my favourite so far. The more I look at my sample the more the Seal Jerky grows on me...

Another option would be Kelpie HH, its tanned locally in the U.K. It comes in dark green/seal brown/black. Combination tanned leather like CXL, they first chrome tan it to keep the leather supple then they re tan it with vegetable tan process so it has a nice color depth. The dark green is a little meh, the seal brown looks gorgeous with lighter reddish brown undertones, the black is teacore i believe. It's quite water resistant and quite good with abrasions.

@Peckinpah The batter seal is pretty dark shade of brown. It's just that the brown CXL I got is the newer batch which is almost chocolate. Photo is taken in daylight so as bright as they will ever be. Would you also consider say Cordovan (burgundy) CXL? It's really one of the best leather out there.
The Kelpie @Jin431 posted looks really good too. There is a photo on the vintage leather jacket forum that looks incredible. Like a pull up jerky.

I really like that Kelpie that @Jin431 posted. I've also considered the Cordovan, I'm just not sure if it would suit one of the jackets I am considering. Those being the Hooch Hauler and the Half Belt Deluxe (without the fur collar). I feel the Hooch Hauler looks better in Tobacco or Badalassi. Perhaps Cordovan would suit the Half Belt Deluxe?

Looks like a burgundy jerky with waxed finish. I almost went with the Kelpie, almost. Lol. But I think you will get more out of CXL or Badalassi. I thought the brand name tanneries were snobbish before, but I was wrong. They do give a little extra oomph down the road.

Do you guys think there is a market for refurbished Vintage jackets? Like real vintage jacket with new lining, fixed up stitching, zipper, pocket bag...etc. and priced same as what a premium repro would cost.

I ask this because I would always fix up the vintage items I buy. And after adding all the cost, it always ends up more than the new one. And I see these totally refurbished Porches and Range Rovers running around now I wonder if it works the same in vintage jackets.

I like to do (or commission) the repairs myself. Seeing both the before and the after is a huge part of the fun. Therefore I don't think I'd be interested in refurbished.

2. Don't matter much. I've only had Lost Worlds recommending removing them. In reality, this is something a maker ought to do.

1. Any soft brush will do. Any soft(er) shoe brush ought to do the job.

2. Rough-out as in underside of leather? Not that it really matters 'cause yeah, these can get dirty / greasy, just like any suede.
If it's beyond the help of a brush, washing machine is your only option. Other than "professional cleaner" of course, which I am wary of as well.
Gentle cycle, cold water, some vinegar mixed with a little bit of fabric softener. No detergent! Leave the jacket to dry outside, though I'd avoid placing it in under a direct sunlight. Water based leather conditioner afterwards (I will usually apply some once it's half dry), like Lexol. And whatever you do, avoid Pecard or any other greasy/waxy conditioner as it'll just stain and ruin the jacket all over again.

1. Zipper pulls? I dont know.
2. Loose threads (poly blend) - I just take my bic lighter to melt it to stop it from getting worse. Only works on straight stitches. The loop locking stitches I have no idea how to save them.

I use scotch brite sponge pads (the green rougher side) to give it a brush. It even takes out stains. Learned this from Tricker's Shoes Sharon's tips.
