I don't think the originals have low stitch count like that.

There's nothing wrong with low stitch count. But if the thread is much thinner than the needle holes, water/rain will easily penetrate into the jacket.

I know higher stitch count is marketed as a functional feature here, but I just don't get it, because I haven't experience its benefit first hand. Sorry.

I remember that one. It was a very small size if I remember correctly. It was already way out of my budget by the time I clicked on it. Another one will show up soon!

It's happening on the top stitch part and not the blind stitch. Could it be just pulling the fibers from the lining? Or sometimes fabric type tape is stuck onto the seam before sewing and could be that. This is your newest 5star right? If so then I am almost certain its the fabric tape used at the seams. I made one of my early 5star jacket into a vest and when I took off the sleeves there was fabric tape. It's common, wool jackets have this too.

Thanks man, yes happens on my two 5stars, my JL and Aero has some loose fiber but not as many as my 5stars.

Relatively new to the finer jacket lifestyle and looking for some advice. I’ve got a few Vansons, which I absolutely love. But recently came across a Real McCoy J-24 for sale. It’s a truly stunning jacket, but I’m wondering what I would notice between it and say the Vanson C2? Got both second hand so the J-24 is going to be almost 8x the price.

There are two ways of going about this (that I know of), one is with glue and then stitch, the other is use fabric tape and then stitch. Shawn's method is the tape way. I don't know enough to say which is better. Here is a pic of a de-constructed 5star jacket I had. I unpicked the seams at the shoulder to make it into a vest. You can see the fabric tape, that's how it was constructed, and I think the fiber you are seeing is from that.

Does schott's 613 perfecto fit true to size? Their size guide reccomends a 42 even though I'm just a little over 39“ around the chest.

I was looking at a second hand 38 since I'm on the thinner side and schotts don't seem to tapper much, should I look for a 40 instead?
With 39 chest, you can comfortably get into a modern 38. Probably not a lot of room for layering though, more punk rockish fit.

You have to find out though how old the second hand 38 is. If it's from the 70s or 80s, there's a good chance it's smaller than newer ones. Ask for measurements. Ask schott for measurement chart of new models so you can compare.

I wear a 40 613sh. I can fit a hoodie underneath but it's definitely snug. I'm 41 chest. So a 40 for you (especially 613 which has the footballs) will be more roomy. Modern sizes though as reminder.

Random question: am I the only one here that prefers zip pulls that don't dangle and jangle about? Like the ones on jeans that lock in place, and make no sound.

I also hate snaps that are designed with that annoying rattling sound when they're not fastened. (Yes, I know a tiny dab of silicone grease fixes that.) To add to the list of irritating wearable noises, squeaky shoes or those stupid rollers that some belts have...

Zippers - I prefer chocolate bar YKK/Talon or chubby box talons over the bells or the paper clips. The leather strip helps to keep the zipper in place or soften the dangle.
Snaps - Only gets worse with age in my experience. No way around this, unless you change them to button which is what people did before snaps but buttons threads can fail and is a pain to find another button and sew it back on with the stem.
Squeaky jacket sounds - I switch to wool on days when I want peace and quiet.
Squeaky shoes - I haven't experience these before, but I have rubber out soles on most of my shoes and they don't make much sound
Roller buckle - Never liked them, always thought they were cost cutting alternatives that will bend and fail. I have drawstrings installed on most of my pants inside waist to avoid belt/button failures.

Any Links or other sources (Insta etc.) where I can find some illustrations or original photos about vintage leather jackets?

A collar gap looks bad. It's unlikely to be a problem for me, though, as I have a thick neck, and if anything I'm more likely to find a mandarin collar too tight to do up.

Hi , Im considering buying this used Irvin coat but am not sure of its authenticity .

Im looking to get your 2cents on whether this is a high end clone or an original Irvin shearling.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking

Looks like it's special contract number?
Maybe send Aero an email to ask. The tag says Aero Leather, but different contract number than what's on their website.

Aero / SB insider:

What spray or finishing oil/wax do they use before shipping the jacket out?

My recent Aero and SB jackets all came with this wonderful new leather smell. A hint of mint. They are three different jackets from two different makers from three different tanneries, so I am 95% certain it's not the original leather smell or veg/chrome tan smell, but a finishing spray of some form of oil and wax mix.

I need to get my hands on this spray and make all my old jackets smell like new. Like new car smell when it gets detailed. Thanks!
