Lightweight hats tend to move quickly also! Quick story about this hat, I had only had it for about a week when I went to an afternoon movie. It had been sprinkling after an earlier heavy rain and there were tiny areas of wetness on the ground. I got out of my car and headed to the theater when a gust of wind took the hat off my head. In all fairness to Art, I did not have this perfect fitting hat pulled onto my head fully. Well...here I am chasing this swift moving hat along the parking lot; it rolled along on its brim like a wheel, it flipped end-over-end - it must have looked like a three stooges skit. When it finally stopped and I caught up to it, I thought it was ruined. There were stains all over the hat - I was beside myself. Here the hat was only a week old and it was stained and dirty - my first light coloered hat...Aarrghhhhh.

Well, next day when the hat had dried off - viola, no damage...it looked as good as new. Being a very light colored hat, where it hit the wet ground it got a small dark wet spot and looked worse than it really was. Once the hat dried it was fine, I brushed the hat and it's been great since and now I always check to make sure the hat is on securely.

I had the same thing happen with a Panama. Funny thing was, it had been windy all day and I was really careful and no problems. Later the wind had dropped, but off it went along the road.

Amazing how far the bloody things will roll on their brims with a bit of a tail wind. I put on quite a show chasing it down the street!

Glad the new VS was none the worse for the adventure.

I was hoping for some advice. I have two hats on order with Art. I had showed him a stingy brim hat I have and this one im going to show you. He said I was simply to big for the stingy, which I agree with. This hat is 2 5/8" on the brim which I liked. He had said I could go bigger, but didnt necessarily say I had to. I have a hat that is a bit wider on the brim at almost 3" and I really dont care for it. So I just wanted to see what you all would say, if the hat does look ok. I suppose this is why we can order multiple hats right? I just want my first two actual customs made for me to be perfect.

BTW, shave the goatee down or keep it? I keep wanting to shave it, but friends and family say to leave it alone.

I think that size looks good on you. If you wanted a little smaller, personally, don't go under 2 1/2.

I didnt really want to go any bigger, but it was suggested I could. I had a 2 1/8 brim that I love, but Mr. Fawcett said it didnt suit me at all, much to my sisters delight. She always hates when I wear my stingy brim Dobbs. I was hoping that the picture showed me in a flattering view with enough brim without having to go over the 2 5/8.

I'm 5' 5" with a 7 5/8 bubble. I have a 2 3/8",2 1/2", 2 5/8" and 2 3/4" Art. The 2 5/8 gets the most head time (lite) so I went with the 3/4 for my latest. The 1/8" difference is astounding. I wouldn't change a one but anything over 2 5/8 will be a western. Move on up and enjoy the shade.
As for the chin spinach. If you are not a pro baseballer or the office I.T. guy it may be time to move on. You say you feel it so go ahead. It's hair it grows back. usually.

Oh, I don't know. I guess I'm the "it depends on everything else" guy. Like where and for what are you planning on wearing the hats, and brim width can't be determined without taking into account brim treatment and crown height, etc.

Frankly, I think the one you're wearing in your photo suits you nicely. Seems totally balanced. What is it, by the way?

I don't usually like stingy brims on me, but if the crown is taller, less brim in comparison helps. Shorter crowns (again, for me) can support wider brims. For instance, I enjoy a 4 3/4" center dent with a 2 1/4" brim. Wider is too much unless the brim is more saddle-shaped. A 4-4 1/2" teardrop or telescope enjoys a brim no less than 2 1/2". Except with a pencil-rolled edge. Rolled edges can function very well on stingy brims, particularly if the curl itself is on the wider side, as in modern made hats. Tighter curls can often work with larger brims, but a wide curl can work on a wide brim as long as there's a good amount of swoop to it.

I digress, as you're probably not considering the curl in the first place. I dig whatever specs are in your posted photo up there.

As for the chin... I always end up regretting it after getting trigger-happy with a razor, but I think you'd pull off a closer-to-the-chin appearance.

It's late and I'm not sleeping as well as I had hoped, so it may just be best not to pay any attention to anything I just wrote!

I received a new VS last night; it's a thin-ribbon in powder blue light-weight felt. The brim is 2 5/8" and it has a really neat gray sweatband. Thanks for the fantastic hat, Art!

I think you need more crown. The dimensions above the brim need to balance out your face & those whiskers make your face even longer.
Keep the chin whiskers but trim them up some. Brim & band width look good. JMHO

Art recommended 2 3/4 brim for me and he was right on. Your face shape is similar to mine so, I would say 2 3/4 would work for you. Regarding the goatee, give it a trim - not quite so bushy but keep it if it suits you and your family.

I agree with more crown for that much brim. I personally do not care for a goatee. Full beard or clean shaven. Goatee's are like tattoo's now. Everybody's got one. Today to be different don't be a human coloring book or wear a goat.
