Connecting the loss of hearing (by whatever means) with the idea of some people not talking much, I am much quieter in crowds or in loud places than I want to be because I can't hear enough of the conversation to participate.
(I can definitely relate to the ""voices at just the wrong pitch" problem. I had to give up the idea of trying to date a certain person because her voice happened to fall in the acoustical "dead zone".)
