I love the combination of fedora and leather jacket. I wish I could wear that today and not be thought of as an Indiana Jones wannabe.

You and me both.

Mom in 1937, age 16, in a hat she made herself:

His Dad (my Grandfather), c1957:

Apparently the paternal hat line stopped there. Pictures of Great Grandpa all show him w/o a hat. Even Dad stopped wearing one when he got into his 40s, which would have been in the 1960s, except for hats that were part of his military uniform. I guess it's up to me to pick it up again.

I assume you want men's hats.

I just assumed an ancestor is an ancestor, male or female. With that said, here's my maternal Grandmother in her "sombrero", holding Mom when she was a baby, 1922.

Great photos..
I think the older photos did not have hats on because of the shadow it would cast on the subjects face. Even up until the 30's I would say alot of the time men would push their hats way back to get a photo made.

I posted this in the 1st page but I think it shows what I mean. My grand dad from 1928.

And by all means please post photos of the ladies as well.

Some of you may have seen this pic in another thread, but here is my great-grandfather c.. I want a hat like that. I want a coat like that. And I wish I'd gotten the gene for pale gray wolf eyes like his.

Here are a few of my ancestor hat pictures. All three are of my grandfather, Will Brown, (b. 1878 - d. 1932). I never knew my grandfather, but grew up hearing a lot about "Dad" from my grandmother and aunts. As a child (and now, I guess), I always wanted to be like him.

This is my grandfather about 1903. I believe this picture is the one responsible for my love of wearing hats. I remember as a child looking at this picture in the old picture book at my grandmother's house and thinking how much I wanted to be like my granddad. Well, I eventually got a hat like that (or close, it was a L.L. Bean "Moose River" hat) when I was about 16 or so, and have been a regular "hat wearer" since. Also, that picture was taken at the "State Hospital in Morganton" where my grandfather worked at the time. Now, 105 years later, I'm working at the same hospital (and in the same building that he's standing beside).

My granddad about 1925.

My granddad (front, center holding his hat) at a family reunion in August, 1928. I always liked the look of the hat he is holding and wanted one like that. Well, after reading so many good things about Art Fawcett's hats, I contacted him the other day and sent this picture. we talked on the phone and he said it would be no trouble to recreate a hat like my grandfather had in the 1928 picture. Needless to say, I am very excited about this!

You're probably correct about that. In the group photo that Russ posted, the men all have their hats pushed back. I wouldn't be surprised if the photographer instructed them to do that for the pic.

It's good manners to remove your hat when having a photograph made (i.e. "posing" for a picture). A snapshot (i.e. non-posed) is another thing. I don't think this is a hard and fast "rule", but does appear to be the general practice.

Here's one of my grandpa from immediately post-WW2.

I don't know what hat it is but you can see he's wearing his M43 double buckle combat boots and HBT trousers with a button down shirt. And if anyone can identify the gun, let me know. :)

I have another one of him (framed at the moment) from the early 1950s wearing what strangely looks like a Stetson Whippet.
