As designed by Carter & Peters the original Shady Oak Farm hat was .5” wider on the brim & taller on the crown than an OR. I always assumed that when Carter switched to Washer Bros & Stetson is when that .5” was lost & the hat became based off the OR dimensions.

PS: And keep in mind the OR came out in 1937.
The Open Road that came out in 1937 was a wide ribbon fedora with a raw edge triple stitch brim.
That hat didn't last long because of all the hats that were similar like the Stetsonian etc.
Then in 1948 they reused the name when the Open Road as we know it was released.

In the Jerry Flemmons book , Amon : The Texan Who Played Cowboy for America he shows a picture of what he says is the 1920s Borsalino version of the hat Amon would give out which was large "ten gallon" type hat (pictured below)
I doubt a Borsalino from Carter as pictured will ever show up. There probably aren't many & they were all given to important politicians & a few celebrities, which puts the hats in private museums today.

Yeah... we'll never see one of those.
Though I hate using the word "never" because whenever I do whatever I was talking about pops up... but I agree that's not showing up.

What's funny is when talking to Brad Peters yesterday he was saying that the Stetson Shady Oak hats had nothing to do with Amon Carter and that they were not the hats that he gave away.
I did not respond in any way but I know he is completely incorrect.
He also seemed to not even realize that Amon's property was Shady Oak Farm and that their hat is Shady Oaks (plural)
He was a really nice guy... not down talking him in any way... just making a point that often when you go right to the "source" they often know far less than people like us who seek out information and put pieces together.

I collect vintage drums and there are many mysteries within the companies over the years about what material they used at the factory and what year did this or that happened.
I have found that when I get a chance to speak to the people who were actually there working at the plant, they actually know far less than anyone.

All he would have to do is go to Carter’s museum when some of the returned hats are on display. I’m guessing that the Brad Peters you spoke to is the great-grandson of Tom Peters?

Who me?

I would not put much weight in what he has to say, and I’ll leave it at that.

I mentioned it to someone once that I had read that Amon Carter Sr. was once the largest consumer of Borsalino hats in the workd. Then, I could never find it again or any other information that substantiated such a claim. The recent discussion got me to looking again.

https://fortworthinc.com/news/how-amon-g-carter-jr-fueled-his-stamp-collecting-as-a-pow/

“During Carter’s confinement, his father Amon G. Carter Sr., the publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, was naturally worried sick about his son. He appealed to his high-level friends, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as the King of Sweden, the International Red Cross, and Pope Pius XII. Another was the head of Borsalino, the Italian hat company that supplied the hat bodies for Amon’s acclaimed Shady Oak hats. Amon, who gave the hats as gifts, bought so many hats that he became the No. 1 consumer of Borsalino hats in the world.”

yes great grandson
I think Brad Peters actually quit just a couple yrs ago & took a job in another job industry. Peters Bros hired a part-time kid to open the store M-F & Peters came in over the weekends. That part-time kid was not a hatter & didn’t know anything. Until your post I didn’t know that Brad was back.

Interesting
I didn't know any of that.
Brad did elute to making hats when he said "I make a ton of Shady Oaks hats"....unless of course " I " was in reference to the company.
