AM radio is awful here, as well. Nothing but a sports station, one or two Mexican music stations, and Disney radio. The rest is a bunch of static.

I'll stick to free Internet radio and my CDs for now.

Radio is gone, or will be shortly. Oddly, since moving to NW Alabama this year, radio is a little better here than it was in the San Francisco Bay Area, but not much. Bay Area radio sucked. Never the less, I bet there won't be any in 5 or so years, maybe less.

I suspect the RIAA will soon be gone too. Good riddance! And with the reputation they created for "their selves" in recent years, they needn't apply for a job with whatever the replacement, if any, might be. Their resumes will all no doubt be "filed" in the round file. My wife is a lawyer, and she says their reputation is actually in tatters. I know, I know, but I can't say that!!

Major artists using labels are dropping like flies. Many have announced they won't be using the remaining CD label organizations anymore. A big blow was last couple of weeks or so - Madonna announced she will no longer be affiliated with a CD (label) organization. I think there are only about 4 or 5 left anyway, and from what I have read they are frantically trying to find a new "niche", which probably won't happen. Sell your stock now! Where the hell is the old Decca, Victor, Columbia when we need 'em? And so for now, "from high atop the Roosevelt Hotel, we once again bid you good night". Is that the way it went? Was New Orleans, wasn't it? 30's, 40's, maybe into the 50's. Been too long since I have heard it, and besides I have lots of senior moments (hours?) now.

Magic 610 is long gone and KABL is now a nutty left-wing talk station. The only thing I can pull down on the Airline 'round here is 810, which was running Bernie Ward in all his socialist glory last night. The rest is spanish oompah and the occasional country. AM has gone the way of the CB...appreciated by few, used as a niche, and completely obscure, despite its fantastic potential.

PTUI. Time to invest in an AM transmitter, hook up a linear, and start some YARRR MATEY radio. That'll show 'em.

KAAM 770 in Dallas is the best Oldies Station in the metroplex. My daughter even lets me listen to it in the car to and from school! :D

Awful, and is why I invested in an AM transmitter some years ago.

I guess 2009 is when it's all going digital. :rage:

I think its a planned obsolesense. They'll allow broadcast radio to become as crappy as they can so people will pay for satellite.

Oh yeah,..I'd have to agree. Just another thing big business in reaching its hand into and wrenching into a total muck! Like TV,...I watch TCM and a bit of the Discovery channel,...maybe something else now and then, but we have at least 6-7 channels that are in another language,....for God's sake, we dont even have much of a spanish or aisian population around here. Besides, I sign up to for channels that I cant understand in the first place!! Dear lord!

am radio is pretty awful here as well. thank goodness for the cbc. it's tired and tedious and somewhat repetitive but at least is not an insult to our intelligence, unlike the commercial stations. having said that, there can be something quite charming about a small town radio station, as long as it stays away from the top 40 format.

I do love KAAM, there's also a classic country station in the AM band and lots of other channels I never take the time to listen to. KAAM also streams online, so I was able to get my fix while living in Wyoming. :)

I was visiting Wiliamsburg, VA last week an was seriously surprised that I could get 2 great oldies stations, if one was a bit fuzzier then the other. And when I drove down to Va beach, I found another one. Good Times.

AM Radio is great here!

The Monterey Bay area is lucky, I guess, because we have KIDD. I am so hooked on this station, it's the thing I missed most when I lived in Orlando for a year....ok, I missed all the great restaurants and the beach just about as much. ;)

KIDD, also known as Magic 63, is a "music of your life" kind of station but it's all local programming with a daily Rat Pack lunch hour, Breakfast with Sinatra, Way Back When, Saturday Night Swing and radio shows from the 30's on Sunday nights. They sponsor swing dances every couple of months too.

Just curious but in So. Cal. AM radio remains full of talk formats and mostly low class Mexican music. I can see the same slowly happening to FM as well. How is it where you are?[huh]

All radio in Spokane and S.F. is just horrible. AM is just talk shows with over the top left wingers and over the top right wingers. AM worse than FM but nothing even ok. The jazz station in Spokane, which is a college station, can't even pronounce the artists names and have the personality and voices of an air traffic control station.

Just out of curiosity, Twitch, what is "low class Mexican music"? Is it anything like low class American music? Any lower in class than low class Japanese music?

What's up with those [lug]nuts in Seattle?

On AM 770 this afternoon, while driving to my daughter's school, I heard one of the stranger happenings of the day.

It seems a man in Seattle was having trouble removing a recalcitrant lugnut from a wheel on his Lincoln Continental.
So...he decided to shoot it off with a 12 guage shotgun.
He succeeded in removing the lugnut and injuring himself.
The police were called.

SHEESH!

Very funny lol lol .
I have wanted to pull over and shoot my cars once or twice before but decided riding "shotgun" in a cop car would not be worth it. ;)

Here in the Phoenix area after you sift through the left/right wing, sports, religious, spanish stations you have about 4 or so music stations. 580 plays mostly 60's and 70's soft hits, but they are located in between PHX and Tuscon so you have to tolerate a bit of weak signal and interference from time to time. You have 1230 KOY which is a nostalgia station and the oldest radio station in AZ, if you can suffer through the John Tesh show they have a good programming otherwise and can even be heard at night without too much static. They have a great Sinatra program. 1440 is a 60's gold station but shuts down at dusk. I think there is also one of those Disney abominations a bit further up the dial where I guess you can hear Hannah Montana and such. I'll sometimes do KOY or 580 during the day and 550 (news/talk) for Coast to Coast late nights. I don't care much for the FM formats here. Even the NPR's are a bit of a let down. Thank goodness for iPods.

In the Seattle, area, it's in the same state of decline. We used to have a really top-notch AM news/talk station. Local programming, all done live. On Saturday evenings, they had a group that did "old style" radio shows. They actually recorded them at the local museum of History and Industry. That show was followed by "When Radio Was", one of the few pre-recorded shows they permitted.

Now, it's the same old blah, blah that I hear wherever I travel. I'd agree that FM stations are going there too.

You make me laugh lol I travel to Spokane a fair bit, and I've listened to the people you refer to. You have then pinned spot-on!

Vintage AM Radio Programmer Wanted

Does anyone know the programming parameters for an AM radio station? I'm wondering what it would take, other than advertising, to have a viable vintage-inspired AM station. So, I'm curious about programming.
What would programming for this station be and how is it done?
Lizzie?
