I was browsing the Australiangear.com site and found two more hats now offered in BGG, the Cattleman and Coober Pedy, and on sale. I promptly ordered a Cattleman.

That's one good looking hat. I seriously thought about one, but my wife had ordered a Lawson, in loden as a Christmas present, so I decided two in the mail at once is enough.

I'm going to guess it's a Coober Pedy from David Morgan. They sell them with a ribbon band, presumably so as not to compete with their Lightning Ridge, which is similar and has the leather/opal band.

In any event, that's a nice-looking color.

Give that man a cigar! It was from David Morgan. I wanted the Coober Pedy and didn't want to wait for it to come from Australia, so I bought it from D.M. I actually didn't notice the difference until I got it.

It looks a bit more dressy to me than the one with the leather band and opal. I looked at the DM site and presume that one you pictured is the moss green.

I may pick up one in the sand color for summer.

I think I might take issue with the claim of abuse. The Akubra is traditionally the hat of the Australian man on the land & this one has done its job (and been retired). A drive through any Australian country town will see plenty of hats not dissimilar to this. The wear on the crown comes from constantly taking the hat off to mop the brow. And a working man's hands are rarely cleaned before he takes his hat off.

This is one of the reasons there are so few vintage hats in Aus. A hat is worn until it is time for a new one. At which point the town hat becomes the work hat and you buy a new town hat.
