My first Akubra

Just picked this Snowy River up on Ebay and am very pleased. One small mark on front of brim that I will attempt to clean (any suggestions?). I've never owned a western style hat but couldn't resist the combination of price, condition and size.

Neophyte, the more I look at the ribbon on your Campdraft, the more I'm convinced that it's wider than the one on the CD I sold a few months back. I like it.

I'm not sure what the standard ribbon width on Akubra CDs are, but this one measures just short of a half of an inch. Thank you very much for the compliment.

GUESS WHAT GUESS WHAT GUESS WHAT!

okay, sorry, I am a bit excited, but it should be rather understandable. My sister just got back from Australia, and she brought me my very first

It is a willow green squatter (which I tip to Neophyte for demonstrating how handsome a hat it is.)

Here it is open crown, which apparently took some convincing on my sister's part to buy it this way.

and now some dry bashes I tried.

So, what do you think? I am popping it back to open crown for the night. Any advice on how to shape it would be great.

Very cool looking Squatter, Yeps! It looks good on you! :eusa_clap

Call me biased, but I'm a fan of sharp front pinches and diamond creases. I think a diamond crease would look sharp on that hat. I'm sure whatever you come up with will look good though, as your trials in the pictures look great too!

Great hat, and snazzy feather too! The Squatter's a nice looking model for sure, although I haven't thought about getting one for myself yet, or even if it appeals to me personally at the moment. That was very nice of your sister to buy it there for you as well, though!

Personally, I think it's fine the way it is right now, although you can crease it sharper to your preference if you're interested. I do think that a slightly sharper pinch won't hurt though.

I do prefer sharper pinches too, but if you like them wider, consider a center dent with side creases, which is a style not much seen today, but common yesteryear... In my opinion this gives better balance to the looser pinch.

Like this:

Please note this is not an Akubra hat, pics are for illustrative purposes of the crease style.

You're Squatter looks great, better than mine by far. To tight a pinch on the shorter crown of the Squatter gives it a lot o' taper, and I creased mine to slant down and forward, rather that up and forward. I'm quite jealous!

You're really making me wish I hadn't trimmed mine. I agree with the others, though, that it would look with a slightly more narrow pinch.

Stop that. Your hat looks good. Besides, you have that Campdraft for a wide brim.

I think I will make the pinch slightly tighter (not much). I can't decide whether to leave it center dent or make a diamond. More pics to come.

Congratulations! That's a fine-looking lid. Is it unlined? It sure looks that way in the picture of the insides, and the only Squatter I've ever handled was lined.

Welcome back, Torpedo! Folks were asking about you not too long ago.

Neither sharp front pinches nor diamond creases for me! I like the blocking that it has.

Yeah, it is unlined. It is the superfine quality/featherweight. I don't know anything about it, but it is a really nice hat.

That is what is so fun about an open crown hat. No old shape to change to get ti just the way you want.

Or maybe you meant you like what I tried. Thanks. I am not going to get it very tight, but maybe just a bit more than in those pics.

Yes, "center dent with pinches" for me, mainly like what you shaped there. Just my personal preference.

Yeps, the Squatter looks really good on you. Wiilow green was a good choice. I like the bash in the photos and the feather is working well for you.

Optionseeker, congrats on the new Akubra. it is always nice to be pleasantly surprised with an e-bay buy.

I have tried again at shaping it, still dry. I don't think this hat will be going anywhere near any steam or even water (well, except rain).

I think this is how it is going to live for a while.

Amorphous blob between center dent and teardrop (I tried a diamond, and it didn't look right. I'd need more crown for that.)

Something between side dents and front pinches and a hollywood brim.

I love this hat.
