Salvage? I don't understand [huh].... It looks like a fine, well worn, and very cool, fedora to me.

Or is it just a dirty old hat?

Thanks, Tone. I'd like to see more well worn hats around here.

Looks good to me. Did you trim the brim on that one?

Thanks, CRH and Chuck. Yes, I meant "Salvage" in terms of what to do with it since trimming the brim beyond its wearable (sun protective) means; but only in consideration of just how beautiful a hat it is/was with the brim. :D

The crown's shape still has some great character even after all this time. I just didn't realize how much I miss this hat (with the brim) until I put it on the other day - without it.

Have been meaning to get another but have had the Bushman to hold out the whole time. The balance of both hats in terms of crown to brim is very similar.

*It'd be great if they made another ribbon color available for this. (Even if sending a darker one along with it separately in the meantime.) More colors in general for this model would be good.

Speaking of decent brims - only with more range of color... :D

Congrats on receiving the Squatter (should I say, yet 'another' Squatter?) NICE!

I like this one! My wife fancies it her favorite color :).

Four point diamond with a kite - official term from the Chief ;). Noticeably less taper than my black squatter with a center dent.

I can't seem to reproduce the color properly with my inexpensive digital camera. I'll have to experiment with different light and when I get it right I'll post pics.

Now for the bad news :(. Upon close inspection there is some mottling of the felt dye where I sprayed tap water for the crease. With the light just right I can see some rust colored mottling, not something I could ever reproduce with a camera. It's still a keeper, however.

So the "splotch" barely reads? That's good news! Looks like another thumbs up in favor of the Willow Green. :)

I like the look of the Adventurer with the brim cut. Great 30's look, IMO. Personally, I prefer it over the original brim width. I know what you're saying about the brim and protection though.

This is a BIG hat. Like wearing a felt Plantation with a snap brim.

Hmmm... Yah... I let this comment go by like I already knew this or something .

What's your brim measurements, Goose? I'm getting 79 x 76 on my green Squatter. My black one is 76 x 73 (as advertised).

"Hey, Bevis. Look at that dude's hat. You could like skate board all day on that brim and never leave the park."

"Dude, that's a Squatter!"

"A what"?

"Hey, But Head, let's go ask that dude if we can skate on his brim!"

I see rust colored hues in the above photo.

Been meaning to replace this AkAd with a new one for almost two-and-half years -but as I pulled it off the shelf today, I realized that, in its current state, I could salvage it into at least a Fed IV until then. [huh]

I don't get over to this thread very often but I do occasionally come by just to keep an eye out for Goose ;) ! Couldn't resist telling you that I think the cut brim looks fine on that hat, and that it looks good on you as well.

That's too funny. As soon as I saw your crease, I thought, "Aha! The Kite strikes again!!!"  :D :D Damn nice looking crease. :eusa_clap

CRH -- that's a great color and a great looking lid. Congrats on making a good choice there. I guess the one thing that would concern me is that, if you had a dye problem just from wetting the hat for creasing, then what happens over time as you make your way through a rain shower or two? Probably worth following up on with Akubra or the retailer.

Anyway, nicely done.

Cheers,
JtL

GOLRAMMIT!!! That is exactly the bash I tried to put into a standard Fed IV, and it just wouldn't go! The Fed keeps slipping into a teardrop no matter how much I steam it! I knew I should have gotten the squatter! :rage:

I am totally jealous CRH, that is a great looking hat. :eusa_clap

I gotta tell you that I did have to wrestle with this Squatter a little bit. It wanted to be a tear drop - it just fell into a tear drop - but I got out the spray bottle and was able to squeeze out the diamond :D.

If you still want the diamond try again after you wear the hat in a decent rain. I worked on my Campdraft over a period of several months just working it a little after a rain. This squatter actually will need some rain water to finish out the dome ;).

Yes, the mottling....

I'll be in touch with Hatsdirect about it. We'll see what happens after a good rain. Actually a rust colored hat with a green ribbon wouldn't be a bad thing :cool2: - well sort of .

I agree, great looking hat!

re the standard fed iv though, a diamond was all mine seemed to want to do!

I've found the 'kite' bash works well for a long-oval head and it also allowed me to take a bit of height out of it.

It's starting to look a little battered after a several bushwalks, but I think I like it better now the shine is wearing off!

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried trimming the brim on a squatter?

I love the crown but find the brim a tad broad for wearing around town.

Anyone take the risk?

Thanks for the compliments, CRH, FFF, and JtL--I'm almost sorry that I'm back in southern California, where the temps are in the 80s and low 90s (and low 100s in the desert, where I'll be shortly)--the Fed will have to hang around a bit more and await cooler autumn days.

CRH, that Squatter looks fantastic. How wide is the brim on it? It occurs to me that I should have ordered one of those, instead of ordering a Campdraft and adding the wide ribbon. But then, it isn't available in Silverbelly yet, at least not through Hats Direct. I'll be curious to hear about those color issues...good luck!

Step in some manure before you drive - or do you ride - into town. The scent will take that insecure feeling away and best of all it will keep the city folks away once you get there...

... and don't forget the bibs lol.

Hey, that's a "squatter" you're wearing not a "yokal"!

Since squatter is Oz for wealthy farmer it's got to be the Aussie country gentleman's uniform.

A tweed blazer over a blue chambre shirt, bone mole-skin pants, a platted belt with a pocket-knife and a pair of RM Williams elastic sided boots!

Your true squatter would be seen in nothing less!

I may or may not have posted previously in this thread some time ago.

Some of my Akubras:

Here's the old style Fawn Federation:

And, my most favored "Squatter" from David Morgan:

I also have a new style Fed Deluxe, which I don't have photos of.

squatters

gtdean48 said:
Very interesting, since squatter has a more negative connotation in the States. They would not be associated with wealth but with freeloading, so to speak.

Yeah, same connotations here but the meaning changed over the years - Back in the day a squatter would simply claim a massive tact of land to run stock and then contest ownership with the crown later. So they were "squatting" on the king's land.

I guess in Americana you'd call them a ranacher.
