Akubra Overload

A friend over in New Zealand contacted me last night to tell me he had just picked up a new (to him) Akubra fedora in a sort of steel grey with what looks like an underwelt brim. Here's the pic he sent and he want's to know when was the "Warwick" model made ?

Cattleman it is ...

I've found the Campdraft felt to be noticeably thinner than the Federation.

If you were interested in saving a bit, I'd say go for removing the liner, but if you want to buy a hat, the CD is great, the Cattleman would be good, too.

Many thanks Randy, from photos the felt on the CD does look thinner.

In the end I reckon I will go for a sand coloured Cattleman for a) its light reflection and b) it has a broader brim than the CD

hopefully the air vents will offset the thicker felt.

but I know there's a Silverbelly CD I won't be able to avoid buying at some point in the future!

and regarding the question about going slightly higher up in sizes to avoid shrinkage ... I've found using a hat-jack really helps. I'm a mid size (60.5 cm)
but have used the jack to make a secondhand 60cm stockman fit okay

and if one of my 61cm size hats starts feeling a bit tight after a rain shower etc. - a day in the jack gets it back on track (apologies if that sounds like an advertising slogan).

That's a sweet-looking lid!

In the "Akubra Hampton and Whippet photos" thread, fellow Lounger Godfrey's favorite hat throughout the 1990s was the Akubra Warwick. He believed it might have been Akubra's spiritual predecessor to the Stylemaster. I find this doubtful, as the Stylemaster has been around for quite a while. I'll see about contacting Akubra directly, but this was all I could find using the Lounge. Sorry...

Thanks Neophyte.I was thinking that some of the 'roos here on the Forum would know something but I feel that from what is shown and talked about is that they are relative newbies to Akubra's and then only current models. I had not thought about contacting Akubra directly. Thanks I will see where that goes !!

Mostly "Outback" and "Western" styles and the much loved CD was absent from this list ! No info as to where the figures came from ( domestic vs overall world sales) but it was interesting to see what was #1, the Cattleman !! Having just bought one I can understand Here's the list

Thanks for posting! This is actually the list I consulted when still debating if I was going to get an Akubra Western. Didn't help much, though, as every hat I had considered made it to the top ten lol!

Why trim the brim Egghead ? Do that and it won't be a Cattleman any more Having now gotten one, I realize that ALL of it's elements ie. bound brim, short telescope/front pnch crown, eyelets and 3 1/4" brim work to give it that Cattleman look

Well mon Bla, (sorry, I couldn't resist the some french here, hope I didn't offend you), I use my hats everyday (not all at once) for commuting on bus/train. My most used hat is Leisure Time because of it's dark brown color and it looks good on me, but even with it's 2 3/4 brim, it's a bit cumbersome on a crowded bus. So 2 3/4" would be max for me and even when I walk in parks/trails that's still plenty. The trouble with Akubras - they are fine hats, is that they do not offer many styles with shorter brims and colors that I like and colors that are available at EA without the 3 month wait. So my strategy is to buy the immediately available hat in color that I like with crown and brim shape that I like and then modify the ribbon and brim size.

That's a solid plan, and modification is fun !

That' reasonable. I must admit to a proclivity for wider brimmed hats as well as bound edge brims Two of my FAVORITE smaller brimmed Akubra's are the Stylemaster for a bound edge and my next Akubra will be the Sydney for a raw edge brim. Both are 2.5" brims the smallest I will wear. Onward thru the fog

I believe Havana's Cattleman, if that is the pic you are talking about, is Sand. That Cattleman and a reworked Akubra Bobby are two hat pics he provides on the first page of the "Western, Anyone?" thread.

David Morgan only offers the Cattleman in Black, Dark Brown, Medium Grey and Fawn. Hat's Direct has it listed in Sand. Since I am subjecting mine to agricultural/animal exposure I went for tne Fawn color which I feel will stay "cleaner" longer than a light color as the Sand is

Nice looking kilt, Jeff, what tartan is that? My 5 brothers-in-law are all pipers in the Dearborn/Detroit area. I myself have a McPherson kilt. I usually wear glengarry, but have also worn a fedora, straw pith helmet and cowboy hat with my kilt. Another forum member wore a boyscout campaign hat with kilt.

My Band the Pyramid Shriners Pipes and Drums wears the Ancient MacKenzie tartan. I wear my Akubra Aussie Slouch or a canvas slouch when playing since the upturned side makes room for the drones.
