Now this leads me to a question - are the CD Silverbelly's silver/white or tan? I've seen conflicting images. Can we get a definitive answer?

:) Perhaps this may help FFF,.... these are two of my hats side by side, one of which is generally excepted, at least in this part of the country, as "Silverbelly", (Resistol), and the other is of course the Campdraft "Silverbelly".
One is extremely light grey and the other a very light sand color.

Why does the crown appear so high?

I am looking into a future purchase of the CD as a hat less formal than those real dress hats, but less casual than, say, a BP.
Everythingaustralian.com claims, the CD has a crown height of 10.5cm, which is in the Ballpark of the Banjo Paterson (11.0cm) and leisure Time (10.5cm) which I already own.
Since I do need the lower, tapering crowns of the two latter to match my face I am a bit concerned about the CD looking so big and massive in all the pics here.
is this just an optical illusion, or part of the bashingg done, or have they really bigger crowns than a BP?
Maybe someone here has both and can shed some light, please.

Thank you.
So it will be one in mid brown and one probably in taupe fawn for me sometime in the future, since the silverbelly appears to be a light grey and I am not too sure yet about the greenish one.
Its so difficult to judge the colours in all the different pics, because the particular light always changes them.
Thank god that hatsdirect doesnt stock mid brown, so I will wait and order both from everythingaustralia at the end of octobre and may have them when I turn 50 in january.:)

Well, if the cm to inch conversion utility I used is correct, 10.5 cm is only 4.1 inches. Open crowned the CD is close to 6 inches tall. The front of the crown on my CD is bashed at about 4.5". Because it comes open crowned, at least from Hats Direct, you can bash it lower or higher to your preference.

That has to be measurements from the telescope type crease in the photo used for the CD. I have a Kiandra which is also listed at 11cm like the BP & my CD's have tons more crown than it does, open crown. My teardrop crease for Glen Grey & Mid-brown are 4" in the back, with 4 1/2" in the front.

Thank you all.
I really like the idea about having a ever so slightly less casual thin-ribboned hat instead of one with the standard wide ribbon, since I never ever wear formal clothes but am more the outdoor-type.
20 years of working in a store carrying mountaineering and outdoor equipment leaves it traces in the wardrobe, I dont even own a pair of jeans.:)

Yup, the Campdraft is for you, Kreissaege. It would fit right in with your outdoor style and would be a good compliment to the other Akubras that we've seen from you.

You'll surely take pride in putting your own brand of crease into the hat!

Campdraft or Fed IV crown heights

Well fellas, I have the urge to send away for another fine hat. Something in a nice fawn colour to round out my recent collection. Just in the last few months I have acquired and enjoyed a Stockman, a Banjo Paterson and a Casual.

What I am curious about is the bashed crown heights on a Fed IV or a Campdraft. I have seen many fine examples of bashes on The Lounge and I understand it is fairly easy with a little patience and practice. I prefer a lower crown and that was one of the reasons I selected the Stockman.

Can I achieve a nice looking shaped crown around 4 inches high with either of these models?

Easy. I've got 6 Fed IVs and a CD and you can have crown heights of as little as 4 or as much as 5+ no problem. It will be determined by the type of bash you choose. A teardrop crease tends up use up a lot of material and so that generally gives the lowest crowns, a simple center dent will give the highest.

Personally I wear mine around 4 5/8 for a good proportion.

My CD's are all right at 4" along the back but rise to 4.5" in the front pinch. The sides may rise slightly to give what folks here have been calling a "tug boat" profile. You can telescope one down to 4" all around rather easily.

Thanks 'fff'ellas for the info. I look forward to placing an order shortly. Now I guess I need to go and find some distilled water. :)

I have two Fed IVs and a David Morgan Adventurer. More to your point, I have a Fed IV in tawny fawn. I put an elongated teardrop crown in it (a lot like a Bogie Maltese Falcon), and you can see from the profile that it's fairly low. The second picture is there to give you a better look at the elongated teardrop.

Bluegrass green

I ordered a bluegrass green Camp Draft from Everything Australian on Monday. I was expecting the normal three month wait. I received an email Tuesday that they had a 61 in stock and would be able to send the hat this week. I will post pictures after the hat arrives next week. :) :) :)

What good luck, Dundee. Can't wait for the pics! I suspect that bluegrass green will be tough to photograph and get the color right but will take whatever you got lol.

This is how my way too oversize size 62 CD from Hatsdirect reached me, as first shown in the "post your new hat"-thread:
2682009.jpg

For comparising purposes, here are some Akubra in a normal size 62 :
2682009001.jpg

2682009002.jpg

And thats how the CD turned out after some hardcore shrinking:
2982009010.jpg

2982009008.jpg

Prior to bashing it, the felt was "tortured" with as much hot tap-water and hot air (from a hair dryer) as I could throw at it.
The pics were taken yesterday while on a 3-hour hiking and trailmaintenance trip, where I wore it for the first time. In this I gave the hat a thorough sweating, even the hatband was completely soaked right to the tips of the loose ends.
The hat is still not there, sizewise, because while wearing it, it loosens a bit and I have to add more pads.
So maybe another shrinking-session with less impact and then the easy part is over and I have to start wearing it in. This will take considerably more time than with the Banjo Paterson and the Leisure Time, because the felt is so incredibly stiff. Being a LO, right now it feels like wearing a cardboard box.
I bashed the crown in this particular way, because I didnt want it to be as massive looking as some others I saw here. My face is rather narrow and I didnt want it to be dominated be a huge crown.
So the crown was lowered quite a lot and the dents were done further down the sides, to be separated with a bigger part of flat front. Thus dividing the front of the crown in three parts, this gives the desired appearance.
All in all, a fine hat, much more suitable for urban areas than my other ones,
and soon to be acompanied (without the usual 3-month wait) by one in Bluegrass green, courtesy of everythingaustralian.
P.S.: the last two pics show how difficult colour-photography can be.
With the lid on my head, I photographed myself under the shadow of some large trees, right in the woods, the hats colour comes out quite fine. The lid in my hand was photographed outside the woods, in the shadow besides harsh direct sunlight. So everything is cold = very blue

Hey Kreissaege that Banjo Paterson looks great on you. Could you please tell me where you ordered that one from and what is the offical name of that color please ?
I have been wanting a Banjo Paterson in that color, but was unable to tell the true color on web sites. Several sites had different names, but that color is the one I have been looking for.
Thanks VickHick
