Maybe it can be spotted in this thread somewhere, but could someone please show me what an Akubra Campdraft (preferably silverbelly, but go for anything if you'd like) looks like with an "LBJ" or Cattleman's Crease? I'd like to see how it compares to photos of the pre-creased modern Stetson Open Roads, which I may not be purchasing, as I favor the quality construction of the Campdraft (and it was essentially a Stetson Open Road to begin with anyway). Thanks, I'd appreciate it. For some reason, I'm finding myself drawn towards a Campdraft as my next fedora (and perhaps western for that matter?) purchase. ;)

It took only 6 days for this hat to travel from Oz to the Netherlands with standard airmail (!) so I can present to you all my new Silverbelly Campdraft:

The crease is not final but bashed by hand only, no steam or water...yet.. I don't like a tight pinch but the pinch in the pictures is a little too wide.. I also tried the cattleman's crease, but that style doesn't suit me somehow, so sorry, no pictures of the cattleman's crease in my CD..

I'm a happy camper! :)

EA shows US $74.93 for Bluegrass Green Campdraft in sizes up to 64cm. I had a back order in for a 60cm so i expect to see a ship notice soon.

Marvelgoose, with the three month wait, does EA charge your credit card immediately when you place the order, or when it ships?

Campdraft in Bluegrass Green

Marvelgoose -

The Campdraft in Bluegrass Green is much to be desired. I really like mine. I assume that if your order was accepted that you have made the cut, notwithstanding later developments.

Greetings from Thomasville.

Campdraft

Sorry to bring up old news, but have just come back to the forums after ordering a new campdraft.

1) I hear alot of people worried about the height and fullness of the crown. If you look back through the decades, you will find that the 1960's did a real number on hats such that our perceptions of what they should look like are all warped today. I believe, as someone else mentioned, that if you can get over the taller crowns and wider brims, most people will find they actually look much better in the older styles and proportions. For myself, you can't sell me a crown tall enough and 6" is about the lower limit of what I can wear. More felt opens up more opportunities for great bashes.

2) I recognize that people associate the Open Road with the narrow ribbon. However, Stetson did make another hat that I am convinced was the same felt, but with wider ribbons. My Grandfathers hat (which I believe is from the 1950's) has a 6 1/2" crown and wider brim edging, maybe as much as an inch wide (working from memory since it's at my brother's - you can see maybe 3/8 to 1/2" of ribbon from top or bottom). The crown ribbon is long since gone, but fading shows that it was wide. I owned two Stetsons that I purchased from my haberdasher in the early 1980's. I cannot say how long they had been on the shelf and they are long since gone. Anyway, they were both silverbelly and had a teardrop crease (or at least that's what they ended up to be after I wore them, I think they came that way). Both had the narrow brim edging but wide crown ribbon. Both had snap brims but they couldn't have been too severe a curl since I tended to flatten them out some. (The second one was to replace the first which ended up inside an elk carcass, my head attached and a long story I will not repeat now).

Does anyone know what this alternate hat was called? I've always wanted an Open Road and I recall being shown it when I bought the others, but I am actually buying the Campdraft more in memory of the two I owned.

Also, since this is my first Campdraft (I've owned the Squatter and Fed III), I believe I heard that the Fed III was the same crown (the Squatter is noticeable shorter) and David Morgan's Bushman is also the same crown. Is that correct? Is the Bobby the same crown - does anyone know?

akubra campcraft hat size more larger ???

hello

I just ordered an Akubra Campdraft on this site:

http://www.thehatstore.com.au/shop/c...08/Akubra.html

and apparently, they advised me to go a little larger than my usual hat size (60-61 cm) as the leather headband inside tend to tighten Up.

for those who know the Akubra Campdraft, I wanted to know how many size up should I take???

ps: apparently, he must wait three months for this hat!!!
Can not we get it before on another site???

thank you

I wear a 61 & have ordered 3 Campdrafts all size 61. They seem larger than other 61s from other hat makers but do conform to my head shape with regular wear. I say order a size 61 if you regularly wear 60-61.

Camp Draft

My Camp Draft just arrived today. All of my Akubras, save one, have been size 60 and that's what I ordered and it fits perfectly. The one exception was my Federation IV Deluxe wherein Hats Direct advised to order a size larger. Even after brutal shrinking exercises, it's still too big and I should have ordered a size 60. I find that 7 3/8 Long Oval fits me consistently well.

I really wasn't expecting it to arrive so soon and am glad it did. It is BY FAR my favorite Akubra (I've had Fed III's, a Fed IV Deluxe, Squatter). It reminds me very much of my old Stetsons I used to wear (though the crown ribbon is different) in brim, crown, and felt density and I am glad to be back in Silver Belly. I feel complete again.

No reason to post photos, I put a soft center crease in it with front dimples and will leave it that way for a while as a change from "hard" creases as I typically do.

For those interested, my experience has been that the Camp Draft (and David Morgan Bushman and Federation III) have had the tallest crowns, with larger radiused "corners" on the top of the crown. The Fed IV is shorter, with sharper corners and less taper. The David Morgan Squatter is shorter still and I don't recall the radius on the top of the crown. All are nice hats and choice depends, to some degree, on what height crown you want. Also, the Camp Draft and David Morgan Squatter have nicely bound, curled brims that create a great snap brim while the Fed IIIs and IVs are flatter (my Fed IIIs started with curled brims but over time have lost their curl and I can't restore it any more and the Fed IV was made to have a flatter brim). My issue with the flatter brim is that it's difficult to keep it from being a dropped "Australian-style" brim over time. On the other hand, you can flatten a curled brim fairly well, leaving just enough snap to help retain it's shape over time. For my head and desired look, the Camp Draft works best.
