We have specifically suggested new members go about making quick comments to reach the 20 mark.
Of course, one could argue whether this achieves the desired goal ;)
Or is this restriction to 20 posts predetermined by the system and you can't change it? Because then the 20 short posts would make sense.

But in principle, I'm not a fan of such requirements. If a forum is interesting enough, people will stay anyway. If it isn't, 20 token posts won't help either.

I think I understand what the forum is trying to do…and also Zoro’s objection. We want to avoid fly-by-night sellers coming in and exploiting the members. The 20 post requirement is arbitrary and doesn’t really prove anything. It really is still a “let the buyer beware” situation. It just makes it a little harder and a little more discouraging for an outsider to come in and be exploited… But it doesn’t completely eliminate the possibility.

I would recommend anyone buying or selling to do their own research on who they’re dealing with, how long they’ve been on the forum and perhaps reading a number of their posts/threads to determine their attitude. Maybe even ask around about them with other members.

Asking a lot of questions about the product, and, if necessary, to see a lot of pictures is helpful. Detailed descriptions with plenty of measurements are as well.

The safest route—though it eliminates the benefit of purchasing on the forum and saving through dealing directly with members— is to purchase through a managed intermediary like eBay. You can still get screwed on eBay, but at least you have some recourse and some mechanisms in place in a case of fraud.

It does not have to do only with fraud. But also with turning this forum into ebay 2.0.
At one given moment, from the first 20 new posts that appear on the front page the 19 were classifieds- mainly by new members who had contributed nothing.
The arbitrary 20 posts were a first, but infortunately not enough, measure to help with that. But that lead to new members posting 20 posts in 15 minutes, even posts like "cool", "nice" or even "-".
I thought this was not desirable, but judging from the reaction of the staff member above I was obviously wrong- in fact new members are encouraged to do so.
Although I honestly fail to see how a post like "I don't like denim" on a denim thread is considered contribution I will respect the moderators will and rest my case.
I am done with trying to help this discussion forum remain a discussion forum.
