My avatar photo - I take my dad every other year fishing to the Rio Negro in Brazil, largest tributary of the Amazon River. We fly into Manaus from Miami and charter a small plane to the village of Barcelos, where we hop on a river boat for ~4 hours to the lodge we stay at that's literally been carved out of the jungle. 6 days of fishing for these beasts. It's a tremendous amount of fun.

Great stuff. And what a fish! My father hitched a ride to Manaus on a freighter in the 1950s, so it's on my bucket list.

Manaus is a neat city to visit. We stay there for a day before headed out on a twin prop to Barcelos. We've not been back for a few years due to water levels, hopefully next fall the river cooperates with our time frame.

Speaking of avatars, and bucket lists; Gardener McKay's Adventures in Paradise inspired me as a twelve year old. Gardener himself renewed the inspiration when I met him on the beach in Kailua thirty years later. (Insert long story about Gardner McKay, ex girlfriends and car dealers in Honolulu and Beverly Hills) Turns out we had several mutual friends as well as shared interests. I credit Adventures in Paradise and Gardner Mckay for my current predicament. That particular item on the bucket list is a sticky thing. Great fish BTW.

Hiking in the Eastern Sierra, my wife, brother in law, and I were hiking to a backcountry lake, for some fly fishing for wild trout. Wearing my Bailey mustang panama

Small world indeed. I was just in Kailua in July. My wife grew up there. And I have the theme song of "Adventures in Paradise" as the ringtone on my cell phone. If you are interested, you might check out Gardner McKays autobiography. Last thing he wrote before his death. He led a fascinating and unconventional life. My next adventure will be a trip to Lisbon in about a month. Looking for a good Fado club recommendation!

It makes me feel good to know that stuff like this is still happening, even in this modern world of ours. (also am glad that he is okay, of course.)

A British explorer who went missing while searching for an elusive tribe in Papua New Guinea has been spotted near an airstrip in a remote area. Writer and adventurer Benedict Allen, 57, was dropped off in a remote part of the southwestern Pacific nation by a helicopter several weeks ago. Search efforts were launched after he failed to show up for a scheduled flight on Monday.

P.S. -- My trip to Lisbon was great. Loungers would love Lisbon... Much of it seems to still exist in a much earlier decade. The Alfama district especially resembles something out of a novel.

I have long dreamed of fishing for peacock bass. And one like that would work!
