In my opinion Freaks is still an effective movie to this day, and one of director Tod Browning's best.

I'd have to agree with you, Lizzie. It's not about his deformity - no. The frightening moment comes from the eerie scenery, those sounds.. ughh, now I remembered the scene again, and it gave me shivers..

The still is from "The Wild Party," pretty much the definitive Clara Bow picture. Several of the gals shown later appear in the chorus lines of Paramount's early talkie musicals, notably the brunette you mention in the second row. She's one of the dancers in "I Want To Be Bad," a rather flammable production number in 1930's "Follow Thru."

Lizzie maybe you can help me identify a movie. This has been a puzzle to me for 50 years. Some time in the early sixties I saw an old movie on TV. Not the whole thing, not the beginning or the end, just part of it in the middle. Have never seen it but that once and no one has ever heard of it.

It was a black and white, Hollywood romantic comedy from the late forties up to possibly 1950 or 51.

The plot involved a young athlete and "health nut" who was trying to woo a young widow with 2 adorable little boys, about 5 and 7 years old.

The boys were all for him but she couldn't see him at all. After several rebuffs he finally talked her into a date.

He takes her to his favorite health food bar where he offers her a "potassium cocktail", at which she looks dubious, until he assures her "it's non alcoholic" at which she looks even more dubious.

The only other detail I remember is that her husband was in the Navy and was killed during WW2.

Does any of this ring a bell?

In my opinion Freaks is still an effective movie to this day, and one of director Tod Browning's best.

I enjoyed it too.
One of the things that springs to mind is that though many think these type of people were being exploited, at least they had a community and got paid, maybe not fairly but possibly that was what should have been addressed, rather than just shout outrage and put them out of a job and a chance to earn some money and live with likewise people. I dont know any 'freaks' but I am aware that real dwarves have to compete with other[average hight] actors now for a chance to play in the Snow White fairy stories in Pantomime due to those dreaded words 'Political correctness'
