Up next is a particularly special hat despite its flaws - a light tan homburg with a chocolate brown ribbon sold by Marvin. However, the union label beneath the sweatband indicates that it was manufactured by the Frank Katz Hat Company. Based on my research, this hat was likely made in the early 20th century, around the 1910s to 1920s. It measures 7 1/4 inches and fits true to size. The felt is buttery soft and can be molded as desired, which is typical for hats made before the 1950s when the curing process for felt changed.
The hat features a wide 2 1/8-inch ribbon and a pencil-curled brim that measures 2 1/2 inches. The creased crown measures 5 3/4 inches, and the inner tag indicates an open crown of a full 6 inches.
The unreeded sweatband is still nicely soft at 2 1/4 inches wide, though it is coming unstitched in a couple of spots near the front on the sides, it is still quite wearable. The liner, made of silk (not satin) is embroidered with the company logo at the top, and is in great condition for its age with no visible staining. Note that because the hat had a pinched crown when I purchased it, the liner shows some minor signs of degradation in the very front where the pinch was, though it is hard to notice.
I love this hat and would likely never part with it since it is one of the older and definitely more unique pieces in my collection; however, it no longer suits me and I need the money.
The primary issue is that there are a number of small moth bites on various parts of the felt—mostly concentrated at the very top of the crown and the underside of the brim. Although they are not highly noticeable, I understand this affects the hat's value and have priced it accordingly. I have done my best to show all issues with the hat, and will let the pictures speak for themselves.
