Looks like 1990s stealth technology.

Let's be honest with each other. How silly do mainstream 30s/40s hats appear to be for most 'average' people today?
Very much, I'd think. Heck, there was a question on "Family Feud" on what a guy could wear to turn a woman off and fedora was an answer!
I guess when you consider what any of us would pay for something from the golden era, in many cases something that would be considered worthless to 'normal' folk, who are we to say anything else is silly or not worth anything?
They probably meant those ghastly trilbys which were recently so popular among a certain crowd. I just don't think most people know the difference in hats, and the "Tips Fedora" meme is not helping.

I’ve heard of memes but no one I know uses them. No clue what the “Tips Fedora” meme is.

Trilby is an interesting word as in the UK it can sometimes be used synonymously with Fedora. Stingy brim or Charlie’s “slim brim” are more descriptive phrases. They are still definitely a type of fedoras no matter what they are called. A lot of members here like stingy brims and several of us like a range of hats that includes stingy brims. While not my favorite style, I’ll always be able to work a high quality stingy brim into my rotation.

I have never grasped the “meaning” of that meme, and I still don’t.
That photo is used almost every time someone posting online wants to use a visual example to reinforce their point that in modern day any male wearing a fedora looks as out-of-place as the young man in the photo. His name is Jerry Messing, by the way, and his primary career is being an actor.

You aren't alone. As I've grown older the number of things I don't "get" has increased, but with me it's usually more along the lines of me not understanding why anyone would care about those things.
I believe That meme is (memes in general really) made by, used and targeted at a younger crowd. The idea being that some younger millennial and gen Z cusp guys throw on a cheap hat will make them look cool but instead in their eyes it makes them a “tool”... or whatever word they choose.

I’m gonna step out on a limb here a bit. I think for the most part us folks that frequent this lounge tend to be of a bit more mature crowd… and those of us who are not of middle age or older do tend to be a bit older souls.

Those throwing around this meme or the “fedoras make you look a certain (bad) way” crowd… I think for the most part mean to target those among their own age group.

Now that is not to say that in their eyes WE are doing it “right” … it is just that to 20 somethings. We are off their radar... as “old guys… who probably wore fedoras back in their day”. Like somehow we were all around and wearing these vintage hats when they were new and in style in the 1930s to 1960s.

THEN as a result of that.. came the “Trilby“ is a cheap crappy alternative to a “real” Fedora worked its way into the consciousness of even lounge folks mostly because of cheap modern target/Walmart sewn together hats. Which creates a sort of “brim snob“ society peering down on even very well made short brim hats from the 60s and even 1930s styles.

So theres my (TL;DR) ;) M’lady/Trilby hate “origins story” two cents… that probably belongs in another thread Anyhow:D:cool:

so long for now…
