Luckily the girls I know and hang out with from time to time are like me - they don't wear vintage, but they like wearing skirts, dresses, heels, hats, etc. so I just get compliments and not dirty looks!

That's a picture of President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn on their wedding day. I think her dress is really cute, I'd love to find a pattern to recreate her dress and I'm sure that won't be hard to do. It looks like it is drop-waisted, and has a pretty typical...
I have a 40s blouse pattern that calls for elastic in the waist, but I think it is still a good general 'rule of thumb' to be wary of a dress that seems 40s/50s, but has thin elastic in the waist. Always check for more clues, but it's not a bad one.
I'm going to second this. Find an artist you love and have a consultation with them - they'll know what will and won't work for a tattoo, and have great ideas because it's their job.
Edited to include:
Who cares if the theme of birds or a compass has 'been done' before? If you're getting the...
Whatever you do, don't let anyone know you feel that way! If you stay confident no one will perceive anything wrong with your outfit, and most of all, don't respond to a compliment with "oh no my shoes/bag/etc. are all wrong".
Has anyone seen anything reminiscent of something ladies would have worn in the 30s/40s? I have a vintage pair of 30s/40s brown suede heels, but they're peep-toe and it rains and snows plenty here in winter.
I'd love to just have boots like Lauren's, but they need to be vegan if I can't find...
I've saved a lot of pictures from here, blogs (they also got their pictures somewhere, and it was probably from someone else's blog), or searching Flickr or someone's Flickr favorites. You can search Flickr groups for a theme (like 1950s year book photos) and all of the photos there will be...
I agree, and not only in the case of (mistaken) pregnancy. It is almost never appropriate to comment on a person's physical appearance (mostly I mean bodies). Because I'm thin people think it must be a compliment to comment on, but it's not okay and makes me really uncomfortable.
By carry off, do you mean actually look ~period~ or just not have your 'do look terribly out of place with your vintage clothes? I used to have a pixie and it went fine with my vintage outfits. If the 50s is your era, plenty of actresses/starlets had short hair. One of the most notable being...
"What do we have now that makes up for this lack of security?"
A lot more civil rights, for one thing. I'm with Lady Day on this one - personally my longing for days gone by never really goes further than wishing I could buy shoes for $1, see this or that person perform, etc. Times were never...
