Hi there! No great wisdom to impart from me :) ...If it were me, I'd find out if the wedding is focussing on a certain era (Theda Bara == 1910s/early 20s perhaps?) and use that as guideline. That would narrow your search down a lot. Is a day or evening wedding ("wildly extravagant" makes me...
Donald Bogle's (the Black cinema scholar/historian) books have very interesting theses and observations on the "hidden subtexts" of ostensibly insulting/stereotypical film and radio roles... and how for example portrayal of Blacks in 30s films is very different from films of the 40s (contrary to...
Awww, if it makes you feel any better, her hats are overpriced (says the guilty owner of a $50 partridge-feathered pancake with a moth nibble* I got there on impulse one day when my snood blew away).
*hidden by an artful (viva!) hatpin.
The Salvation Army near 26th(?) St. in the Mission...
If it was an "alternative" station some years ago it might have been "Father of Mine" by Everclear--does this sound familiar?
"Father of mine
Tell me where have you been
I just closed my eyes
And the world disappeared
Father of mine
Tell me how do you sleep
With the children you...
The "old wives' tale" in my part of the woods said that after ya makes yer cuppa tea, to take 2 cooled-down, gently squeezed-dry (still damp) black tea bags and let them rest on your closed eyes for 10-15 minutes. I can see how that might work, black tea being rich in tannins, which are natural...
Great idea! Would meeting-up on Saturday afternoon (it's open from 11 a.m.-7) work for other ladies? It being Fillmore Street, there are many cafes and drinkeries/eateries we could choose from. That part of Fillmore also has several "nicer" type thrift and consignment stores (like the Junior...
[Apologies if this should go under "Events"--feel free to move it or ask me to do so].
I thought some of the Bay Area ladies might be interested in a vintage knitwear exhibit and trunk show in San Francisco this upcoming weekend (Aug. 9-12). If interested in going to the opening reception on...
For those of you not familiar with the wonderful work of Rosa Rio, she's a silent-film organist who has been playing a *long* time...:

Also nice pic of her playing the organ in 1934 at the Brooklyn Fox Theatre.
I've only bought some Spanx tights (the "reversable" ones) for when I was travelling in a snowy climate. Just my experience (gotten spoiled wearing vintage sheer stockings) but I had the unhapy sensation of wearing a thick polyester straightjacket around each leg.
Very fun to read everyone else's routine...
Do the same thing every day, unless I'm in a coma:
Wash with Pears' soap and brush with Pepsodent
Pluck eyebrows
Dab on Max Factor Pan-Stik and dust with Coty powder.
Line lips with any old lip pencil and add some shade of red lipstick
Comb out...
Forgotten? Not when I'm around! :)
Other likes:
mortadella doused with mustard and veggies on Italian/French bread.
Swiss or sharp English cheddar, served likewise. (Mustard is good on everything. Except your eyeball. Ouch.)
Marmite and peanut butter on wholewheat toast. Yum!
There are definately converters for small pens, maybe something like this:
(quoted from a pen sales website)
"3. Aerometric-type Bantam converter. This is a short converter, which will fit those pens that only take a single international type "short" cartridge.
Gold plated finish; this is the...
The blades pictured look like they can be substituted with, yes, regular safety razor blades from a drugstore (also have a 40s safety razor myself and no trouble using contemporary blades).
HTH,
Ellie
I think it would be better if they had less conventional actor/actress choices...still haven't seen anyone come up as a "Wallace Beery" or "Marie Dressler" yet... ;)
