Shorter than ever before! For the first time ever, my sets last several days. All that time playing with setting lotions and pincurl patterns and all I really needed was short hair. ;) This haircut is courtesy of The Little Vintage Beauty Parlour in Nottingham, UK. I've curled the front section...
Besame Cosmetics will no longer be supplying their stockists in the UK. Sephora do ship to the UK, but you only reach the flat rate shipping of £6 on orders over £75/$106ish. It's a real shame... trying to find a good alternative to my beloved Cherry Red before I run out!
Middy update: first stylist I found turned out to have no idea what they were doing and made an absolute mess of my hair. Looked further afield and found a hair angel in Nottingham. Miss Whitley Belle is a stylist at The Little Vintage Beauty Parlour and knows exactly what she's talking about...
A hair update... I went to a salon who said they could do vintage hair cuts but they absolutely butchered my hair and I lost so much length! But afterwards, I found an AMAZING hair stylist at The Little Vintage Beauty Parlour in Nottingham, who gave me a proper cut. A lot shorter than I'd have...
Goodness me ladies... after using pillow rollers for a while I decided to give pin curls another go, as they do give a smoother look. Well, it's a good thing I started early in the evening! I've been at it for an age! Thick hair means I have to do such tiny sections and my hands really aren't...
Recently stumbled across The Leopard Lounge, an Australian hair salon with products specifically made for vintage styling (http://theleopardlounge.com.au/collections/ladies-atomic-hair-products). The prices aren't justifiable for me considering I do fine with my £2 lotion, but the packaging is...
I always do - I'd get through it too quickly otherwise!
@Helena Grace - some of my hair styling books suggest beer as a setting lotion. I haven't tried it myself; but it says to let the beer go flat overnight and apply it straight. The smell should evaporate away! I have also read that plain...
UK ladies, I recently starting using a new setting lotion that has worked really nicely for me. It's StaySet Setting Lotion Extra Firm and you can get it in Superdrug for about £2. I fill my little spray bottle with water then add a generous squirt of StaySet, and it holds my curls better than...
It's been a long time since I shared my hair! I'm all one length at the moment and struggling to hold a good style for more than a few hours. Desperately trying to get a middy cut, as I think it would take a lot of weight off and help me keep lovely waves for longer. <3
Ava, I have never cut my own hair before, but the U cutting guide doesn't look too intimidating. Not so sure about the Sam Villa video - looks a little more difficult to do alone. But achievable, definitely - and quite similar to the middy style, as you say.
I saw the stylist today and to my...
Well, here I am again, lurking in the Middy Thread... I believe this was the first thread that lead me to the Fedora Lounge a few years before I signed up, and several years later, I still haven't obtained this elusive haircut!
It seems hairdressers are really frightened of the middy, but I've...
A new book on 1940s hair styling is available for pre-order on Etsy here. It looks promising, and I like that it offers both traditional wet set methods and heat methods too. I'll probably wait for a few reviews to emerge before ordering though.
Most vintage appropriate shades of lipstick double up really nicely as blush. Quick and easy to apply, saves money on purchasing a separate product, and looks gorgeous! I do it with all of my Besame shades.
I just love this thread. Forever browsing - love getting to see 'real' women versus studio/made-up film stars. It's a great little pocket of history. Thank you to everyone for such wonderful contributions!
