    70s/80s Stetson catalog

That's a bit later on the timeline than the focus of most of the catalogs here, but some 70's stuff shows up in the Western Ranch Outfitters thread: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/western-ranch-outfitters-stockmens-catalogs.51482/

    Hat Creases

So.... Hats of that era were sold open crown, i.e., un-creased, then creased to the wearer's preference. You can do it yourself, no shop required. Most typically, the Homburg has a center crease and no dents. I have one with just a center dent, and another with an added pinch.

    Hats on TV

Been watching the 2nd season of 1923, Alexandra has just arrived in New York, she hops in a cab and they cut to this shot (pardon the pic of my TV): Well I know that sign, and that is San Antonio. Pretty neat to see the period cars out front of Paris Hatters though.

    Stetson Sweat Stamps/ LOT XXXX

Why is my explanation less logical than yours? Please, detail the evidence as to why it is more likely that the whole hat was manufactured rather than just the sweatband. If you can't show that your claim is more likely than mine, we should not consider it as such. Both are possible explanations...

    Stetson Sweat Stamps/ LOT XXXX

Not really, no. As long as we are wildly theorizing, it's equally possible Stetson sold components. Add me to the skeptics list. There certainly are things accepted as general wisdom without 100% verifiable proof, but there's not enough here for me to say that this is one of them. More...

What Hat Are You Working On Today?

Still contemplating what the finished product will be, but I am a sucker for a sale, so I grabbed a FEPSA 100x rabbit felt in black cherry from Pure Beaver. I missed out on ebony, which would have been my first choice, but also had never picked up the 'new' black cherry (although that was really...

Looking for advice on repairing the felt on an '02 Borsalino

Maybe a dumb question, but you have tried just steaming and brushing? It's possible that this is a worn spot if you handle the brim by that area. But hard to tell exactly what this is from the pic. If you've already tried steaming and brushing, have you tried a hat sponge? That will actually...

    Thinking about Conversions

I think we're talking about two different things. I don't really consider changing the crease or brim shape as a "conversion." My posts are directed towards someone who is aiming to take one hat and turn it into a completely different hat. Not just changing from a center dent to a diamond; doing...

    Thinking about Conversions

Lol. I used to be in that group. Funny thing about the other mod of that group, apparently they had themself a lil fit when I pointed out that they were trashing someone's product based entirely on speculation while at the same time boosting a competitor. That post was removed for some strange...

    Thinking about Conversions

I miss the old Internet. I don't frequent so much anymore, but one of the forums I used to spend time on is The Replica Props Forum, or RPF. As the name suggests, it's the corner of the internet for movie buff detail obsessives. My personal Indy hat journey started there, ended here. One of the...

    Thinking about Conversions

So, if you're going to be doing a full rebuild you would need: Hat block: you need a block that is one size above your normal hat size. E.g., I wear size 7, so the blocks I use are 7 1/8, this is to account for the sweat band in the finished size. Flange: needs to match the size of the block...

Better quality than a modern Stetson? Sure, I might buy that. But any hat with a pressed in crease like that, is not going to be better quality than an older open crown hat IMHO.

Please help date this Stetson and any comments are greatly appreciated. This is my first vintage and I am stoked. 3x beaver its clean I paid $60. I

Oh, this hat should be much nicer than the Akubra and much easier to reshape. Night and day. $60 is a steal. I much prefer the older Silverbelly dyes to the modern Akubra anyway, which is more of a yellowish sand tone. Pop the crown back open and steam it when you get it. Don't let the steam...

These are not really the best pics for dating, as the stamped logo inside can also be an Indicator. But based on the plastic tip liner, 60's is a safe bet. Probably latter half based on the color on the liner.

Trying to date my great grandfather’s Borsalino Fedora-PLEASE HELP!

I don't know of anyone in NorCal that does a full hat cleaning (as in, take apart, clean, rebuild). Baron Hats in LA could do the work, but I'm not aware of their current pricing. If you have a hand held clothes steamer, grab a horse hair shoe brush (more or less the same as a proper hat brush)...

That line is not going away unless you do a full reblock of the hat.

IIRC, this Borso is 5 1/4"

Nothing off the rack comes to mind for me. It's probably a 5 3/4" or 6" tall crown, 2"-2 1/8" brim, 2" ribbon. The first two pics looks to me like there's actually a downward slope towards the front. I.e. you can see the back of the hat through the pinch in the middle pic.
