Public Morals TV Series Hat Accuracy

Don't expect too much in terms of accuracy. I mean, I've seen backwards hats on background actors before. The costume designer probably found an off the shelf Borso and called it a day. I thought Boardwalk Empire did a pretty decent job, though I am not at all an expert on period clothing...

    Boss of the Plains?

It must be some weird statistical oddity that mine is from the same shop. IIRC, they had one shop on Telegraph next to UC Berkeley and another downtown, but I never was able to find a pic of the store. Kinda funny to think about the BOP style being popular in Berkeley a century ago. Posted in...

    Why the X

Bump for posterity, because I had never seen this post until today, and have already referenced it twice.

    The Open Road Guild

If this was ever true, it was most likely not the case during the 1950's. The only reference I've found on the lounge to x = 10% was tonyb speculating about the origins of the system. As best we can tell, the 5x and 7x Clear Beaver hats are 100% beaver. Stetson has never disclosed their blends...

Ask a question, get an answer

Lest the resident FB group pedant interject, technically, Stetson still exists as an independent company that licenses their IP to Hatco. But there was also the intermediary time where Stevens was manufacturing Stetsons. Not sure about how much equipment was transferred and what made it from...

    Akubra Campdraft

Should go without saying that I am just one person with an opinion. So speaking only for myself, I think if you paid for a new hat, you should get a new hat, not one that is deformed. Yes, the damage such as it is, is very minor. And the headache of the return process might not be worth your...

    Akubra Campdraft

Are returns free/do they cover the shipping? If so, I would just send that back. That hat looks like it has been improperly stacked under another hat for too long. Hence the impression from the sweat band and wavyness in the crown. Steam should help, but IMHO you shouldn't be in the position...

    Fedoras afield

Incoming social science rant... In all seriousness, assuming that nobody did so, where is the harm, exactly? I can also say from experience that a decent proportion folks kept their hats on in La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, I put mine back on after a while because 'when in Rome....' This...

    Boss of the Plains?

I've also thought that Montgomery Ward claim was dubious. I didn't search exhaustively, but that site that has a scan of the 1901 catalog also has this "Stetson's Monthly" dated 1899. A few pages after the quote below, there is a picture captioned "WASHING NUTRIA SKINS."...

Need some feedback on wearing fedoras

Counterpoint: t shirts and hats work fine. Not everybody wants to dress formally all the time (or at all).

Ask a question, get an answer

In general, unless you're buying from some weird Facebook ad with a price too good to be true, I personally don't really think counterfeit Stetsons are a thing. And if I were knocking off Stetsons, I sure as heck would not be doing this era of hats, where we had already passed into "Stetson in...

    New hat to me

Well, while this hat almost certainly fits the commonly accepted definition of "vintage" in being more than 20 years old, many here would consider this a modern hat for all intents and purposes compared to the pre-war vintage hats that are most desirable. While not a 100% foolproof 'rule'...

    Softening felt hat

My follow up to that is, for what purpose? If it were my vintage 25, I wouldn't do anything to the hat other than steam it. I have one of the later, stiffer 100's, and that is not my preference, but I wouldn't try to alter the felt. It is what it is, an example of production during a moment in...

4X beaver question based on the mid 90’s

Not to say that one ad page should be considered a wholly representative sample...but look at the ad above. We've got the 100, and maybe those 7x's count (forgot the year of the ad), but then there's six other felt qualities listed which presumably are all blends of a sort. I think modern...

4X beaver question based on the mid 90’s

If you wanna take the claim up with the Forum, be my guest. For prewar hats, a 5x Clear Beaver is generally regarded around these parts as a pure beaver hat. Do I have 100% unassailable academic proof that this is the case? Not as such, no. What has been passed on from one hatter via Hatco, is...

4X beaver question based on the mid 90’s

Curious as to where you picked up that an 'X' at any point meant 10% beaver? Stetson, for example, has never disclosed their formulation, and 100% beaver has been presented as both 5x and 7x at different points. Also just doesn't really pass the smell test for a 90's hat to be 40% beaver...

Ask a question, get an answer

This is mostly an Indiana Jones hat thing. During production, a tool called a rounding jack is used to cut the brim. These usually get set at a specific width, so it is uniform all around. Whereas a dimensional brim will have varying widths. The Indy hat is typically 2 3/4" in the front and back...

    Softening felt hat

It's not rocket surgery, peek behind the liner and look at the stitches. Either way, the main point is you do not need to replace the band. Not only is it wholly unnecessary, it would be a crap shoot trying to find a matching ribbon.
