I have four Akubras now, and I've found that they just take a little time to break in, some more than others. I figure it's the same as breaking in a new leather jacket or anything else: a little uncomfortable at first, but eventually it becomes totally yours.

My BGCD that I've had for a few years now has seen plenty of rain, snow, and hot sunlight. It's gotten really soft, while retaining its shape, and is my most comfortable hat.
I tried out the newspaper tactic this week and it reduced the smell somewhat. I'll give it another go this week, and then try the bakingsoda. For the sweater I used Woolite and white vinegar, which works beautifully. I only wish I could use it on the jackets.
