    Show us your TIES

A new charity shop opened in the area and they have a great selection of ties in the random old junk basket: Of course they have the most boring conservative modern ones on display. This one is a Tootal, cotton. very versatile I think. Nice and short: and a nice wool one:

    Reproduction classic workwear

Coming along nicely Simon. Would anybody know what these trousers could be? Soft loden-like fabric. Labelled 'XL' so I assume they aren't vintage but repro. Perhaps a world war two uniform reproduction?

I picked up this rather battered tie at the charity shop. It is short, light and ties a small knot. I suspect it is pre-1940s. What do you think?

    Putting it all together

The trousers aren't actually solid grey, but green/brown (or mushroom if you want to call it that) fine herringbone. But regarding what you say about mixing colours with the same tone-Wouldn't that be too close to mismatched suit territory? Could you share the link to the J.Crew looks please...

    Putting it all together

The trousers are cut like chinos. Yes, I had a red shirt on to brighten things up. The problem is, I don't like more than one bright colour in an outfit. Maybe black or olive green trousers next time?

    Putting it all together

My housemate commented ''your outfit isn't working... two greys'' I thought this mushroom small herringbone looked good against the crisp grey big herringbone. What do you think?

Wes Anderson period film: The Grand Budapest Hotel

I watched it last night. I enjoyed it! In my opinion the best out of his most recent films, in that the marriage of plot/setting and art direction is very harmonious. Some of the more slapstick moments were a bit reminiscent of the Marx brothers, the fictional but familiar setting reminding me...

    Japan in the 1950s

Good post. My thoughts exactly regarding the organic adoption of foreign cultural elements.

Wildcat, Best US Navy Fighter WWII

Remarkable ratio for such a humble aircraft. But then there are factors such as handling, visibility and pilot training. Are the Mustang numbers just for PTO or ETO as well?

    Japan in the 1950s

Thanks for posting. I particularly enjoyed the photos of the model ships against a sky background used in the Yamato film. Great insight into film-making techniques.

Welcome! Good stuff. It's nice to see a modern take on the vintage look for a change.

This is why I like J. Peterman

What is even the point of those drawings? They aren't particularly enticing. Illustrating a man wearing the garment showing combinations of colours and patterns is one thing, but just a bland drawing of an empty jacket?! On a positive note their entrepreneur blazer looks great. But then they...

Nothing exciting, Marks and Spencer St Michael. In fact some of the old M&S stuff is very nice, but whenever I walk into their shops nowadays, I find their products are thoroughly conservative and lacking in design. No flair at all. It's a shame, because as we all know, classic needn't be...

Not a frequent contributor here, but I'm rather smitten with this silly nautical tie I picked up at the charity shop today. :o

Wes Anderson period film: The Grand Budapest Hotel

The last two posts hit the nail on the head. The eccentricity started to lose it's subtlety in the last few films. It doesn't really seem like he's going to regain it this time round, but the setting might provide a more suitable frame to support the pomp this time.

    1920s suits

Great! I think the late 1920s-early 1930s created the most balanced looks.
