A recently acquired Dobbs Fifth Avenue Fedora has what appears to be a clear-ish plastic cover over the liner. It is now quite foggy. It occurs to me, after watching one of Kevin's Youtube videos that perhaps it's an addition to the liner, that can be removed.
Is anyone familiar with this...
I think it will be fine. I'd look at some of Kevin's videos (Guitars and Hats on Youtube). He shows in many of them how to reshape a brim without a flange. I think getting the dirt off is number one, then gradually reshaping the crown, starting with an open crown, then working on the brim. A...
Who's "she?" :)
Washing it may have been a mistake. Kevin, in one of Youtube videos, says that once it's wet/soaked, the shape it's in when it dries is it's new shape, as if it has been steamed.
I'm surprised by this thread. I'm new here, and new to the details of hat cleaning and blocking, but I've already cleaned and re-bashed one with good results. I'm just surprised that a good hat ending up in the mud and rain could lead thinking it ruined, and replacing it. Also, I am surprised...
Is it appropriate to list a Dobbs hat for sale in this thread, or is there a separate marketplace thread? Sorry, I'm new here and can't find the latter.
Maybe the pics leave something to be desired; it has a very Homburg-y brim, bound and sewn, and with a small-diameter pencil curl. It won't snap down like a Fedora. It was advertised as a Homburg, and someone in the Homburg thread seemed to think it was one.
I'm tempted to make one. I have a rather large metalworking lathe and I have turned wood on it. I could glue up some maple and turn a nice "head," as long as spherical/cylindrical would be useful, which I think it would.
I received the gray one, the second one I mention, in the mail today. Slight water damage on the bottom of the box, but otherwise O.K. Hat seems well-worn, but pretty good. I cleaned it with a lint roller and a hat brush, steamed it first into an open crown, then put a center crease and a...
Thanks. Yes, I like the idea of having the inserts, but haven't found any new boxes with them. The used ones on eBay are as much as hats! I will keep looking, and noodling.... Maybe there's a business opportunity here. :)
Yes, thanks. The ones I've seen on eBay are just too much dough for me right now. I'll keep looking.
I'd also like to find some new hat boxes that are like original hat boxes, except maybe more durable, that don't cost an arm and a leg. And, where can I find those nifty laces that came...
Thanks! Gee, I was certain that second hat was a Homburg. I guess it isn't due to the edge of the brim? I'll receive it today. So far I only have the first one in hand.
All of the pics from the eBay listing are here, plus a few fun images...
I'm a new member, and just bought my first good hat. Well, depends on your definition of good, I guess. And that's not counting the gorgeous Carl Fiedler opera hat I acquired 13 or so years ago.
I'm going to a black tie wedding this month, and my research indicated that the proper hat for...
I just joined. I'm 64, and I like hats. Had to wear one in High School as it was a military school with a uniform regulation. I had a few 'weak' hats, but just bought a few good ones on eBay: a couple of Homburgs, one Knox and one Dobbs, and a Knox fedora. I have a clothing steamer which I...
