And then a miracle happened!
I was wearing the hat around the house for a couple of hours and thought "this doesn't feel right." So, I pulled the homemade paper towel and card stock pad from under the sweat, and put it back on - pulled it down, pulled it side to side - and by God, it fits...
Thanks, Glider. I probably have some suitable leather on hand. How about cork? I've seen self-adhesive cork sizing strips. I have some cork sheets and double-sided tape.
Greetings! New here. I have a Carl Fiedler opera hat. As such, it has no sweatband as a regular hat would have. I wear a 7 18, and i'm pretty sure this one's a 7. Is there any way to enlarge this kind of hat?
Thanks,
jv
Got a Dobbs in the mail today! A beautiful, nearly new condition black Fedora, in the box. I swear, this is like a new hat!
Only issue is that even though it's a 7 1/8, it's still loose on me. Do Dobbs run big?
Yes, there's lint on it - no longer! It has a very snappy brim.
Other than...
What are the BEST sizing strips, or otherwise best way to pad out a sweat, or make a fur felt hat a little snugger?
I bought a beautiful, like-new condition Dobbs Fedora on eBay, and it arrived today. It has a 7 1/8 tag on the swweat. Immediately upon putting it on I thought it was bit big...
Thanks for the welcome, Steve! I already posted pics of the Homburg, here:

I think I mentioned earlier that one of my Fedoras has masking tape holding the band in place, presumably for sewing. They left the tape there, and it looks original.
Just have to decide what presser foot to use - maybe the zipper foot.
Wow! Well, I'm so ignorant I could just be wrong, and this won't work. But it seems, based on my trial of putting the hat on the machine, it will work in this case.
I'm also glad you replied as you did, I was searching for that term - the reed - that's in some hat bands.
Do you know a...
I'm not really highly skilled, but I'm an engineer who's a bit OCD. :)
The Panama I have is quite compliant. Also, the sweatband has a cloth flange stitched to it, so I need only stitch the flange to the hat, and once the hat band is put back on, none of my stitches will be visible. I didn't...
I recently bought a black Homburg. I want a gray one, too. It seems prices of gray ones are much higher. Is this just a transient condition, or is it generally so?
Oh, that's good to hear! Can you say his username?
Now that I know how sweatbands are attached to hats I don't think it's such a hard job to sew one in: the stitches are not visible once it's done, and I m pretty sure I can do this on the machine. I was able to get that portion of the hat...
Stop me if this is too far off-track.
I started sewing the liner back together and discovered (duh!) that the side part is gathered at the seam attached to the top part. Time to finally try out the ruffler attachment for my sewing machine! It gathers, and will do so as the gathered material...
A couple of years ago, before I was clued-in to quality hats, I bought a Conner straw Panama hat. I had seen one while in Martha's Vineyard and I love it; they just didn't have my size. When I got home I order3ed one, online. The mode is Jensen Panama Straw Hat. I paid $51...
If I could find a very, very thin, flexible, crystal-clear material I would put it in, as I think it would look nice, and also protect the liner from skin and hair oils, and hair products.
Decided to make a pattern from the pieces before I stitch them together. I can practice making some...
Thank you!
It looks just awful, so I've decided to remove it. I've removed the liner, which was hot-glued in, ripped the stitches holding the top in, the "bucket," so to speak; The lining looks nice, the 'clear' plastic looks crummy. I pressed the top and sides of the lining and am preparing...
