From my fairly extensive collection of black hats, a rare survivor from Vanzina of Pavia manufactured before the era of Borsalino ownership that followed WWII. Vanzina was located in Pavia about 40km south of Milan. The retailer was in Brunico near to the border with Austria and the style shows...
Thanks again... I cross posted with you. Yes, my research shows the same and though I've not seen a stamp from Jewelex that looks like that on my ring, I don't find another maker using those letters. I did write to them with these photos but haven't had a reply. They seem to be a large company...
Thanks for posting this. The three hallmarks to the right have a match with the date mark indicating 2013 I think. The left most mark is for the maker and I've not been successful putting a name to that JX imprint in the shield.
Holiday shopping has a dangerous habit of bringing me into jewelry shops. We have a new store that opened a couple of years back at the end of our street. He has done a few repairs for us that turned out well and I decided to work with him on a custom project that will repurpose some material...
In my day job as a greeting card publisher, I've been around a lot of folks who work with and care deeply about the U.S. Postal Service. Way too nuanced a topic to speak at length about it here, but suffice it to say that unlike other delivery services, it is obligated to service all addresses...
A high quality velour made by Anton Peschel (Nový Jičín) for Oviatt's, likely later 1930s. The materials and construction are impeccable, the cotton (or linen) liner might represent a shortage of silk ahead of WWII. A notable survivor... remarkably, Steve owns a relief plate used to print this...
Barbisio nutria bound upbrim, likely pre-WWII sold in Sofia, Bulgaria. This is a favorite hat in this style - very easy to wear with its modest proportions. One of two hats I own with the descriptor "radio."
Borsalino Ludoela in color curdo. Borsalino model names usually defy translation, but the colors, though fanciful, usually have a direct translation to English. Curdo comes up as Kurdish, which is puzzling. Perhaps a visit to Kurdistan would explain?
A soft and furry beaver fur felt hat - early 1930s or earlier. I don't know much about the maker (perhaps the Bancroft that became well-known for military hats and caps?) or the store where it was sold.
Thanks Perry... I remember this hat created quite a stir among the old timers when Zetwal first posted it. I was happy to have a chance to buy it a year or so later. The beard is a nice surprise. I've tried it several times before - always too feeble to keep. I think it is being trained by my...
Happy New Year... first hat photo of the day for 2025 is this Stetson Nutria Quality. Likely later 1930s, the felt quality is working man thick and rustic but the hat is finished impeccably and shows virtually no wear save a few moth nibbles. This hat came to me in its original box from FL...
Gift from an old friend who knows I collect this stuff. Surprise to find this whimsical bolo in one of my Native hallmark books in the section for Patania's Thunderbird shop.
What we wore for dress-up in Cheyenne, Wyoming around 1900.... a formal western hat with fancy silk ribbon and silk wrapped underbrim that becomes the edge binding on top. Not a hat you run across every day of the week.
Warm holiday wishes to my pals at the Fedora Lounge!
