Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

Wow--I agree. There is still Taylor's on 8th and The Pacific Dining Car, but with Edwards and Marcus gone, it is slim pickings for vintage steakhouses right in downtown. Plenty of new ones, of course. The deli is gone, but further down 6th towards Hancock Park, Cassel's Hamburgers is still...

Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

That is a beauty and at a great price. I have one similar as well as a really early Elgin wrist watch (1918) that is almost like a small pocket watch with two lugs for straps. Today I am wearing my 1948 Rolex bubble-back Oyster with a rose gold bezel. The best thing about it is that it...

    Ann Miller

I saw her in Hamburger Hamlet shortly before she died. Big, jet-black hair and an infectious laugh. She was drinking beer.

    Bespoke military uniforms?

I once went to a murder mystery party and was told to come as a military officer. I went to a local vintage military store in Santa Monica, hoping I could find a cheap hat or something to wear to the party. Instead, I bought an WW II RAF officer's uniform that fit me like a glove--scary how...

Gentlemen: The most beautiful actress from the beginning of film up to the 50's....

For blondes? Garbo, Lombard, Kelly. For Brunettes? Myrna, Ava, Liz. For redheads? Rita Hayworth. Sohpia Loren defies all attempts at categorization--if in doubt, just watch "Houseboat."

    Cooking with Spry?

In our family it is a lamb-shaped cake mold (my grandmother's) and the ears are impossible to frost without falling off. Toothpicks help.

    Cold/Cough Remedies?

Lemsip is the best--I bring it home from the UK whenever I travel (along with Twiglets and Hoola-Hoops). Although there is nothing wrong with a hot toddy.....

    Show us your TIES

Wow-- I have this same tie but in dark green and purple--sadly, I didn't get a chance to thrift it, but paid full whack. I got a great purple tattersall from H&H to match.

Fun party: check out old "Esquire" bound volumes...add cocktails...stir

Equally fun are bound sets of The New Yorker and The Illustrated London News. Generally, I pour over these in the library of my old university, so the cocktails are sadly missing in the stacks. Next time I'll pack a sidecar in my flask and see how it goes.

    Boater faction!

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a good boater movie. The costumes have that odd timewarp of the 1920s as seen throught the prism of the 1960's, but lots of great boaters. A young John Gavin in an Arrow collar and a boater--now that sets the standard....

    What are you wearing today??

The day started out a little cool for Los Angeles, so I wore a three piece gray herringbone made in 1966 by Hector Powe in Regent Street. With it I wore a modern white spread collar double cuff shirt from Polo, antique silver deco cufflinks, Church's wingtips (the Chetwynd") that I bought in...

    Glendale Airport? Grand Central Terminal

And speaking of Glendale..... the railway shots in "Double Indemnity" were filmed at the Glendale station. Worth a visit (unless you are in a cast and heading to the Stanford game.....).

    songs that make you shiver/cry

Obvious things like Albinoni's Adagio, as well as the Rolling Stones' "Fool the Cry" and REM's "Everyboby Hurts." And any lament played on a bagpipe. Sentimental war tunes like "I'll Be Seeing You" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and on the Christmas note, Nat King Cole's "The Little Boy That...

Who is your favorite "forgotten singer"?

Not sure if she was forgotten, but Anita O'Day doesn't get nearly the attention her work deserves. Jackie and Roy are also a great, overlooked duo.
