Vermouth and Lillet are both fortified wines, of which there are many different varieties. Lillet is more like the aperitif Dubonnet because it doesn't have the ususal herbal flavorings that defines Vermouth and features orange instead. Great stuff, though, and like Vermouth (and Dubonnet) it...
Noilly Prat followed by Cinzano followed by Martini and Rossi--but that's just me..... Lillet is an excellent aperitif and a great alternative for dry vermouth.
It does take a certain confidence to wear these but you can do so knowing that they truly are the most appropriate footwear for evening clothes. Patent oxfords are correct but lack the style that pumps have. Velvet slippers and even that 60s Gucci loafer look (real ones, that is) can work but...
I have two Briggs umbrellas that have lasted me for years--a classic black with Malacca handle and a tartan racing umbrella with a pencil in the handle for marking race cards. They cost a fortune and are worth every cent--as long as you don't lose them. I have sent one of them back for repairs...
My favorite is (was) by Floris, but they don't seem to make it anymore, so I now use Bay Rum from D.R. Harris. ST. John's and Royall are both great--Have used them both.
Nancy Drew; Reporter. My daughter loves this series and never has to ask twice for me to join her. Original 30s version with Bonita Granville and John Litel. Really great stuff!
Okay, I am going out on a limb with this one, but around this time of the year in the City of Angels, you know that it is autumn (often so subbtle it passes by without notice....) when suburban lawns are reseeded. The smell of the manure that is spread on top of the seeds will always remind me...
Did anyone happen to catch this? A really remarkable documentary with an excellent book (Angels City Press) to go with it:

Phineaus' pink shirt plays a large role in the 1959 novel A Separate Peace, which was set in the early 40s. That is enough of a role model for me. Seriously, though, I like pink and think it generally looks good on most men.
I agree--the Scala straws are great but that is where it begins and ends. Interestingly, I just bought a Scala beach style straw hat to replace the one that my dog ate. Swallowed it whole.
Sloe Gin is great stuff--in England they often give out shots of it to guns on a shoot, although Whisky Mac (Ginger Wine and Scotch) and "Chisky" (cherry bran
dy and Scotch) are also traditionally flasked for those sorts of occasions. I think that you can make good cocktails from it, like Sloe...
Just tuned in to a broadcast by KUSC of a concerto for trombone composed for Tommy Dorsey. Only ever played Carnegie Hall, the Hoolywood Bowl and then KUSC. Great stuff!
My favorite time of year--baseball season overlaps college football. I love the fact that much of the sports merchandise that one can buy is retro in its look--not only team brands but vintage jerseys, caps from Orvis, J. Peterman, etc. Today I will wear my father's 1951 vintage USC hat in...
