Is there something you really want to wear but are chicken?

Remarkable image, Cynthia. Is that an illustration or a retouched photograph?

Is there something you really want to wear but are chicken?

I bought a very nice 60's vintage three-piece sharkskin suit off eBay about a year ago and still haven't found an occasion to wear it. It's sort of crimson, leaning toward the purple side, and looks previously unworn. Size 48 and fits me like it was tailored. A rare bird indeed. I may post...

    Kid's Observations on Traditional Dressing

I'll have to go with the girl and her dad on that one . . . To me handkerchiefs are a fashion accessory for show only. The idea of carrying a snot rag around in your back pocket all day is one Golden Era custom I want no part of.

    Show Us Your Tattoos

Can't believe this thread got to 13 pages before I came across it. And here I am a resident tattoo artist. Shows how much I visit The Observation Bar. Anyway, these tattoos are not on me, but they are my tattoo work on other people:

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

Not really worried about fitting in. If in doubt, I'll go overdressed. Just thought a dress code primer would make for an interesting read.

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

I'm just glad I'm old enough to remember places that still had hat and coat checks/rooms when I was a kid. My folks were not fancy people, and my dad was a blue collar journeyman, but we often dined out in nice places and always dressed up for the occasion.

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

Someone of authority on here should post a concise primer on the different levels of American dress code: casual, semi-casual, smart casual, business casual, business informal, informal, semi-formal, formal, etc. It'd be an interesting read, and would make a great sticky. (if this has been...

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

Do any restaurants still have dress codes any more? I remember as a young kid going out with my folks to restaurants, and a good many of them were "coat and tie required" places. Now days we're lucky to find "shirt and shoes required" I enjoy causal dining as much as the next guy, but it...

    Pomade

I tried all kinds of pomades and just couldn't get past the greasy feeling on my scalp. Depending on what you want to do with your hair, SPIKER is the best holding product ever. You put it in wet (it's wholly impossible to put it in dry - it's like thick glue), comb your hair into the desired...

    Boxing films

The Set Up is probably my favorite boxing picture. The story could have been told without ever showing the ring (and almost was). Did someone mention Pulp Fiction in this thread? I believe the Brice Willis segment borrowed heavily from The Set Up: the focus on the character in the locker...

    Bicycles & suits

If the guy on the bike had bigger shoes, I'd swear he was a clown. Why is it that in modern fashion shoots they always try to throw some element into the mix (in this case several) that looks totally absurd? Are they simply too unsure of themselves to play it straight anymore? Has the...

    My Bar Mitzvah suit

Hey Bruce, From what you've said, it sounds like you're way overdue to treat yourself to a couple of suits. Even if you rarely have an occasion to wear them (like me), it still feels good to have a few in the closet. Acquiring one or two needn't break the bank either. Some of my best suits...

    Need vintage-style cowboy hat . . .

Thanks all for all the advice. To answer some of the questions, yes, this hat will be worn as stage attire, so it doesn't have to be top of the line as long as it looks good. I also don't want to spend a fortune on it - hopefully around $100 or less. But reading some of the replies, I...

    Need vintage-style cowboy hat . . .

    Actually, more like this . . . or this . . . or this . . . But I don't want to pay $500 for a custom job.

    Need vintage-style cowboy hat . . .

Can anyone suggest a source for a vintage-style white or off-white cowboy hat similar to what Country & Western performers wore in the 50's and 60's? I've been to a couple of western wear stores but, with the exception of a few nice Stetson fedoras, all their hats look too modern. Their...

Agreed, this has to be one of the best films of all time. What else can be said?

Essential Books every Gentleman Should Have?

Esquire Magazine did an article on this subject many years ago (back when it was a worth-while read). It posed the question: Given only 36" inches of shelf space, what would you consider to be essential reading/reference books for the cultured gentleman to own. I forget what their original...

Classic Casual Jackets every man should own . . .

Depends. Are the awards and citations from high school honors? If so, they'd be best left in the momento closet, IMHO. A grown man still wearing his decorated high school letterman jacket might look pretty sad. To each his own, I guess. Some insignia on a letterman jacket or even an A-2...

Classic Casual Jackets every man should own . . .

This is just my opinion of course, but I'll start this off with five I'd consider essential classics for a well rounded coat closet (not including heavy winter or dress coats): 1. A-2 Flight Jacket 2. Black Leather Motorcycle Jacket 3. Navy Pea Coat 4. Letterman/Varsity Jacket (mine is...
