    Show us your SHOES !!!

Stetson shoes. I spent two years in Turkey, 72-74 courtesy of the USAF. Our little "base" exchange started carrying Stetson shoes, in black only for uniform use. These were leather lined, and extremely comfortable, and they had narrow sizes. Our job was supporting the personnel at a major...

    Show Us Your...Inkwells

I have a Rotring "inkwell" It came as part of a pen pencil set. It is simply a piece of aluminum bar stock 6 sided about 1 1/2" per side with Rotring engraved into three sides. It's about 2" tall and one end has been bored out to hold a bottle of Rotring ink.

    vintage toys

I have 4 road construction toys that my parents bought for me back in the late 40's early 50's. A road grader, dirt hauler, crane and a concrete mixer. About 30 years ago I stripped and repainted them for my son, and next year they will go to our grandson. They are all metal(steel), no...

When is it ok to wear a navy blue hat like a Fedora or Homburg? What about black?

I go dressy casual these days for work. Yesterday I had navy dockers, a blue plaid shirt, navy Filson vest, black Allen Edmonds Fifth Streed dress boots, and a navy Stetson Dexter.

    Show us your Guns!

One of my favorite rifles and calibers. I have six, including one that was made in 1898, but my prize is one made by Mauser Oberndorf in 1900 with a two digit serial number. It has been arsenal shortened to their short rifle configuration. The others were all made before 1917 with one having...

    Rubber vs. leather sole shoes

Generally speaking, I prefer leather soles, especially the Allen Edmonds with the extra thick soles they call "double oak". I used to stand for extended periods and found them quite comfortable. Leather seems to be better if you are walking on a carpeted area as they do not seem to grab and...

    old-fashioned hiking boots

I have an old pair of Vasque mid weight boots that I purchased back in 1972 when stationed in Turkey, to wear boar hunting back in the mountains. The waffle stomper soles were much better than our issue combat boots for hiking those mountain trails. After a lot of use there for two...

    Gooseneck Lamp Refinish

I did one some years back. I used very fine sandpaper on reflector bowl, and a wire brush in a power grinder stand to clean the actual gooseneck and cast iron base. It still looks good.

    Rugged Smartphone Holster

I have an iPhone 4s in an Otterbox defender. To carry I use one of the Saddleback leather belt pouches, which holds the phone snugly, sometimes a bit too snug but I do not have to worry about it falling out.

    New VS Vintage Stetson Hats

I purchased 3 new Stetsons over the last year. First is a fedora, their Dexter model in navy, labeled as an Imperial Stetson, ultimate finish. It seems to be a nice mid weight soft felt. Second hat was a 4x Open Road, nice looking and very stiff, compared to a vintage hat in the same...

MY LORD IT'S HOT (Summer attire questions)

Get a straw with an open weave band all around the crown for ventilation. It makes a difference and to me feels cooler than no hat, creating a breeze across the crown of my nearly bald head when I walk. A straw with no ventilation can be hot, especially one of the higher quality ones with a...

    Cool New Allen Edmunds Boots

I just received my Dalton's last week, and wore them over to La. for a funeral. As a pallbearer I found the extra ankle support nice. Mine are in the dark brown calf. I just got an email that the Fifth Street model I ordered at the same time have shipped and should be here in a couple of...

Buried Spitfires in Burma to be excavated.

Link did not work. I would like to read. I wonder what is left after all these years. Was a lot of wood and fabric used in their construction? I commented to quick. I looked up construction and early versions had fabric coverings on control surfaces but they proved inadequate for high...
