And it comes in half a dozen weights too Elmo. You don't specify what weight your approximate weatherproofings criteria are based on. I think the question refers to the weights and not single or double layer of an unknown weight ..... BT is far more knowledgeable on this subject than you...

    WWII Crusher and Garrison Caps

Hey Matt, I know you weren't mocking those who served in any real nasty sense but it is so easy to belittle the efforts of the unsung heroes (but heroes nonetheless) of any armed services of any war (or peace). My Grandfather was an Infantryman, a was I. Whilst serving I certainly gave...

    The Humble Anorak.....

The French Chasserus Alpin' Anorak Here's the French anorak. Nice bit of kit. Slanted chest and hip pockets to allow easier access and drawcords ar hood, waist and hem. Button cuffs. I picked this up on Ebay for $20. Definately not ventile or waterproof without treating but a good...

    WWII Crusher and Garrison Caps

Of course the guy might've been too old to serve active duty ...... Maybe there were other reasons. There have always been plenty of so-called REMFs who wanted to look cool. Quite natural really. Not everyones' grandfather could be a war hero but they also did their bit and should not be...

    The Humble Anorak.....

I think this "Anorak Like Brad Pitt Wears in 'Tibet' " stuff has been done to death in it's own thread. No need to infect this one with it too surely ?!! :-)

I always thought that what it meant was that you would lose 40% of your total bodyheat loss through your head assuming that the rest of you was suitably covered up. i.e. that you still lose 60% of your heat through your clothed body. That to me seems logical. Dave

Here's one of my favourite everday use ventile jackets. Double layered, lightweight, in the style of the older Grenfell cloth hiking jackets of the 50's & 60's. The two rear pockets are very useful..... I get the feeling that , judging by the complete lack of other peoples' photos...

The GREAT BRITISH DUFFEL COAT thread

You're welcome Mic. :) I was making the assumption that being American, you would know the height / waist & chest / leg sizes. I have those on that data sheet .... now where'd I put the darn thing .........? And remember, the sizes as given as the post WW2 but pre-NATO sizing. WW2...

Tour of the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge Last week I had thepelaseure and privalige to get a guided tour of BAS by an employee there. It was just one-to-one and was very enjoyable and informative. The tour guide has been South several times and has a real interest in the good old...

    Vintage WW2 Mustaches

Not an expert on this myself but from personal experience I can say that on operations in tropical climates, shaving wasn't encouraged as if you cut yourself in that climate, it could go septic very quickly. Also, a beard kept some bugs off parts of your face. And it was a badge of recognition...

    The Humble Anorak.....

I haven't a clue Rob !! But I suspect that as the Arctic was explored earlier than the South, that designs from places like Greenland and Northern Canada (which are basically the same indigenous peoples) got to Europe that way rather than being a seperate but identical solution to the same...

    The Humble Anorak.....

Pip, If you treat the anorak with the right stuff like nikwax, you will have yourself a winner. The 10th Mtn division anoraks are brilliant i've had several  - just not for temperate climates. Too hot, too heavy and don't take a waterproofing agent very well. Fur and rain...

I know what you're saying but I have to say that I like the idea of using the old style kit in the old style. I'll take the so-called discomforts and enjoy them as I'm looking to have a vintage experience and want it warts and all. It's a kind of experimental archaeology I suppose...
