Check page 18 of the 'Show me your favorite jacket' thread. One picture of my ugly mug is enough but the jacket doesn't suffer from the model. It actually looks a little better on me now as I've lost a little weight...
I have a feeling that US Authentic A-1 might end up wearing pretty well. The hide looks like a lot of the more expensive Japanese makers does when new but I'd bet good hard wear and a couple rain showers would give it a better patina. Also, keep an eye on the Good Wear sales page. There's a lot...
2jakes, no real expert either but that definitely has more of a goatskin look than horse. Goarse skin maybe?? :D Originals were made from capeskin, which is meant to be goat but a lot of it these days is lamb or sheep.
Looks a nice first try. Very close to spot on, especially in fit. The only thing I think looks a little off is the pockets. They look a hair too long and slightly high up but that's an easy fix really. Well done for having the courage to make something you love and good luck with for the future.
Yeah, wide hangers. Either purpose built or modified as above, in a nice dry and airy spot. I never store leather jackets (or much else) flat. Deep creases can form which can be hard to remove, especially with leather. Always thought that Eastman box was a completely useless gimmick.
Isn't that a USN name patch for a G-1 or other Navy flight jacket? The WWII AAF name patch is the slim strip of tan leather with just the name/rank in a single line of type, right?
Edit; Ok, above post added while typing this reply. So, never mind.
Mold spores are incredibly hard to kill, nature designed them to be just that and subsequently so is their odor. Any moisture just gives them a lifeline. I bet if that jacket were to stay damp for a few days you'd find that mold starting to spring to life again. I had a discussion with the folks...
I bought a 2nd hand Eastman that has a blank one on it which looks fine but I don't think I'd put my name on it. Just because I like to keep a little anonymity.
A professional leather cleaner, not just any old dry cleaner, is the only real way to deal with mold. It isn't just a smell, there is a living organism in there that needs to be properly destroyed.
Ok, I guess we can chalk it up to the internet messing with the lines of communication and language once again. I thought this thread would be an innocent little thing just asking for some personal advice and experience. Who'd thunk that replacing a zipper would be so contentious.
Anyways, once...
Well excuse the heck out of me for being so stupid. I'll make sure I keep my ignorance to myself next time. Oh and by the way, making a jacket and fixing one are two entirely different things. But as I said they did a fine job.
Well, life got in the way off me getting the zip replaced until this last week. However now it's been done, I can report that Johnson Leather did a fine job. Followed all the original stitch holes, worked around some of the trickier spots, such as the covered snaps that are very close to where...
If an M-422A would suit just as well as an early G-1 then this very nice one just came up on the Good Wear sale page. Even though it's labelled a 46, it's more like a 44 because these fit slim, especially around the middle.

Good Wear uses a better Shinki HH, without all the character pressed out of it. Specially made for them. They also now, I believe, have access to this new Italian HH that's been causing all the fuss and debate lately about which is the best. So that's another point in their favor. Along with the...
As mentioned earlier in the thread, go Good Wear. Made to measure. That is if price and time are not a factor. I'm guessing price isn't if you're looking at RMC. To me, John's jackets are much nicer than any Japanese repro. They all tend to look a little flat and generic to my eye and their...
My answer to a question like this is always going to be Good Wear. Their price and wait list might mean it's a surprise for next years Father's Day though. In that time you'd have more than likely found an original but John makes the best. Eastman or Bill Kelso would be the next choices.
