Best I know is D Bar J . Dave Johnson does a great job with these. He makes them for the Cowboy Action Shooter crowd and has been doing them for years. Ask for David and tell him Mustang Mike sent you and, with any luck, he won't charge you double!! :p
I spent a fair amount of time on the phone with Winchester Hats one day discussing the felt dyeing process. Its a lot more complex and complicated than I would have thought and not something I personally would delve into, just sayin ...
I've used stiffer if I'm redoing an older hat that has lost it's rigidity. I used to do a lot of renovations on some pretty beat on cowboy hats and it was the only way to get the hat to a place where they could really hold a recrease. I've never really needed it on new felt. Also, take care of...
As a Life SASS member (#4105), I'm a HUGE "Tombstone" fan. I've been blessed to be acquainted with Buck Taylor and Peter Sherayko. I've even got the opportunity to work for Peter on season one of the HBO series "Deadwood." Having seeing the Sherman McMasters character, wearing his awesome hat...
I was searching the threads and I came across one that has the exact same question I have. Found one in a vintage store today and snagged it for $30. Just a curiosity piece this point but I was looking to see if anyone has any knowledge of this label? I'll try to get a pic uploaded but the one...
Darn nice work there DD! Hopefully, the Good Lord will let me stick around the planet long enough for me to retire and have some spare time to experiment with some of the awesome stuff you guys do!!! For now, I just get to admire your handiwork! :)
Thanks for the tips guys!
Found the shoes. I'm going with a pair of Stacy Adams Daytons. Figure I can't go wrong with basis b/w.
On my way home, I'm going to hit our local "Retro Row" on 4th Street, in Long Beach, CA and see how close I can get to find a knit tie to match the suit.
I'm going to be attending a 40's dance in a week or so, and while I'm quite comfortable with my suit and fedora, it's the shoes and tie where I'm a bit stuck. I need some direction on a shoe style that will work AND an answer as to whether a knit tie would have been appropriate for the era...
Nowadays, 3rd world countries (so to speak) pull that number with all sorts of apparel. Some folks will buy those items knowing full well that they're fake, just to save a few bucks so they can look "kewl"
Picked up a Silver Belly Biltmore at an Antique store a couple of months back for about $25. Swapped out the sweatband, added a grosgrain ribbon hatband gave it a good steam cleaning and after reshaping it, I put it on display and resold it for $120.00 to a cowboy action shooter. It was a fun...
$140 for that hat is about right (when it was new) If it's in really great condition (sweatband and all) then you didn't get taken to the cleaners, but it's not a steal. Hey, if you like it , it fits, and it's what you expected, you did O.K.! ;)
I was blessed to pick up a few yards of various colors of vintage grosgrain a few months back. I have been using it for customers who want a vintage fedora or Old West style and those who specifically request it. I'm always on the hunt for more sources of vintage grosgrain.
