thanks Dinerman, i must say i'm surprised that Beau Brummell didn't begin til 1936; i would have thought some of the BB designs i've seen are earlier than that. anyone have a 1920s Palm Beach tie ? better yet, a 1920s Palm Beach tie they want to sell ?

    The Preppy Handbook... Returns!

look at the boring 'collegiate' stuff that Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren sell (not the vintage lines like RRL)... that's preppy. i must admit i rarely see anyone in the UK who dresses like that, and if i do it's probably around the Bond street area of London. it's a US Ivy League (or...

What is your raincoat of choice?

i've been after an original 40s British one for ever, but never found one small enough. they usually have a heavier, more deeply grooved gab than the Burberry or 'Columbo' type and are often in grey / taupe hues rather than light tan. here's a pic i saved of one (for some reason i don't have...

    Why!!!! Hipsters!!! Why!!!!!

'Hipster' is far too broad a term to really define any sort of vernacular style. you have to be much more specific if you want identify the real style trends... ;) http://www.exactitudes.com/index.php?/series/overview/65

    The Vintage Tailoring Thread

Barmey, any idea what 50 metres would cost ? p.s. the lining above is from an Edwardian frock coat that seller 'Style Service' has on ebay.uk... there are other nice ones too, but that was the most unusual.

    Today's Thought for the Day

yes; every generation is egotistical enough to think that it was the last one that represented something important that has now gone for ever.

    Today's Thought for the Day

you mean parents as role models ? role models often skip a generation; that's why many young 20 somethings are rediscovering the style and culture of their grandparents, and turning their back on what their parents represent.

i'm going with cord; they have that 'velvety' look that cord can have in photographs.

    College wardrobe

flat-top, it could be. looking through Sears ads of the time, some of the fabrics that fit the bill are: cotton twill, cotton duck (which is basically canvas) or corduroy.
