The trick with a jacket is too sun tan it. That starts the process off quickly. Then handle it a lot. The natural oils from ones hands soon add patina. Oh and not to care about stains or scratches. Just embrace it all.
I'm 49 and I wear a well documented (on here) Good Wear J-100. It's the jacket that keeps me from putting on too much weight. If it starts not to fit properly, I go on a diet.
So here is my belt and wallet that were originally completely undyed. They took about 4 months to darken significantly but this is now about six years of constant use. Blue shades come from the indigo of raw denim.
I don't have a jacket but do have a belt and a wallet that were completely undyed. They are now the most lovely shade of aged. I'll post photos in the next day or so.
I have been lucky enough in my youth to see The Cramps, The Meteors, Guanabatz, Restless, Demented Are Go, Sunglasses After Dark and King Kurt. With a few other minor leaguers thrown in. Still listen to them all from time to time but The Cramps remain firmly fixed in my top ten bands of all...
Give me Liberace's bank balance and I'll happily wear that outfit! He didn't care nor did his millions of fans. Bit of an extreme example but in real life fashion/style (and as much as some here may deny it, our jackets are still fashion) is always driven by the ones who aren't afraid to stand...
No item of clothing will make you look any different. It's about the wearer and how they feel in it. If you don't give a sh*t what anyone thinks, then that's it. Done.
To me it looks as though it comes from that time in the 70's when they were reviving the 40's? It's a very nice looking jacket, although I think it would look more natural on you in person rather than fit pics for the Internet. Which I sympathise with as someone who struggles not to look awkward...
That asymmetrical button front is pretty close to grail status for me. The café racers are slightly on the busy side to my tastes but still look like top notch jackets. Glad I'm too broke to even consider a purchase. But I will remember that design for the future.
There was very little break in time at all. John at GW did wear it for awhile to test the pattern but most of what you see there is me wearing this jacket. I'd say after about a month it looked nice and worn. I've worn it in the rain until almost soaked through but it air dried in no time and...
This is my Good Wear Buco J-100. It's made from Horween HH. It's about 2.5-3oz and is super soft. John doesn't offer this leather anymore (as far as I know) but from what I've gathered it's very similar to what Diamond Dave uses. It's a very versatile hide in terms of temperature. However I'm...
If you search eBay you can often find NOS Made in America Alphas. They cost about the same as Alpha charges for the Made in China ones they now sell. Fairly similar to the last of the military contract versions they made. They are short and wide so finding the right fit is a little tricky but...
The only reason I would do this is I already have two Good Wears and they are both Dubow's (without purple knits) so I would probably opt for a contract from a different maker. Or maybe a USN flight jacket with their purple-ish knits?
As for why purple at all? As the saying goes 'Close enough...
A button up lancer front jacket like the one at the top of the page is my current grail. Also really like that fringed café racer. Always had a soft spot for the fringed look. Back in college I had a fringed Lewis Leather double rider, just to be a bit different. Picked it up for about £20. Boy...
If I were too get another A-2 from John, I would be very tempted to put the purple knits on it. No matter if it were contract correct or not? I love that seal brown/purple colour combination.
Thanks Monitor. The sneakers are the 70's Chuck Taylor reissue from Converse. Better quality than today's regular Chuck's and with the nicer vintage shape. I wish they weren't Nike and were made somewhere other than Vietnam (USA) but I have been a 'Chuckhead' my entire adult life and can't...
Paul Simonon in an A-2 repro. Always a style icon for me but I think this might be the first image I've seen of him in what was presumably a brown leather jacket? The same documentary had Topper playing drums in an Irvin. Now that's a way to work up a sweat!
I have tried on several occasions to contact them about making a purchase and never received a single reply. Not a word. Both from emails and phone calls. In the end I just gave up.
