Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

I have seen that in some posts, but mostly in posts from younger FL members - students mainly. That's an age group where peer pressure seems to be most obvious. Have you personally experienced that as a mature adult? Other than the occasional "Why are you so dressed up.", "Going to a...

    Panama in a Homburg block?

    Try http://www.hats-plus.com/p-157-dobbs-eldorado-godfather-straw-hat.aspx or maybe http://www.aztexhats.com/products/89-Stetson-Hats/353-Dobbs-El-Dorado-Straw-Homburg-Hat/

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

If it stopped right there, no problems. As many of us have stated. But there has been this idea expressed several times or at least heavily implied in this thread that people shouldn't be "allowed" to dress any way they care in general. And that is what has provoked some of that hostility you...

The Declining Popularity of the Necktie

If I was out there looking for that job I'd be thankful for all those badly dressed people. Automatically gives you the advantage, doesn't it? Employment Darwinism.

    Hat comeback

I think there is some demand out there among the over 40 crowd especially. Some of it certainly has to do with protection but not all of it. I get asked quite often by complete strangers where I bought whatever hat I'm wearing that day. Quite often they seem disappointed when I tell the from...

    Mobile Phones?

No predictions for the future, but my son (30) has never worn a wristwatch, doesn't have a land line, and uses his cell phone for both. I have a smart phone, but carry a pocket watch or wear a wrist watch and do have a land line. I do have to say that if I had more bars on my smart phone...

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

The problem I have with this whole line of reasoning is that the group you are talking about is the majority of today's society in general. And there are not now nor have there ever been anything like actual rules (outside of closed entities) that dictate what one wears. There have always been...

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

Consider this. If "society" gets to dictate what one wears, then right now we are in the minority here. "Society" is more likely to dictate that we all wear our pants down around our butts and baseball caps cranked 90 degrees to port instead of suits. Beware of unintended consequences.

Whatever happened to "coat and tie required"?

Or perhaps it's that people are refusing to let others impose their arbitrary demands on them. That sword has two edges, doesn't it? I think if you want to dress up when you go out, then by all means do so. I certainly do. But my standards are just that - mine.

Educate me. How does diluting whiskey "open it up"?

    Pocketwatch, where to find?

If you go to amazon.com and search on "mechanical pocket watch" you'll pull up quite a few under $100. Some of them might appeal.

    Golden Era Passtimes / Hobbies

I guess that amateur radio qualifies as I got interested in it as a teen reading old Radio Boys novels from the 20's. I don't know how vintage my fly fishing actually is, but it's the original form of pleasure or hobby fishing I believe.

    Hats & Health

Like others here I started wearing hats religiously after having a skin cancer removed from my forehead about 15 years ago. It's only since joining FL that I really started learning about the better hats out there, though.

Let's See Your Watches! The Vintage Watch Thread.

Here's my everyday carry, a Hamilton 992B from somewhere between 1951-1953 by its serial number. Runs perfectly. I had one of these back in 1970 that I carried while working as a relief railway agent and switch tower operator for the Norfolk Southern, but stupidly let it go when I changed...

Any Other Conscientious Objectors.....To New Years Eve

I'd just as soon go to bed early on New Year's Eve, but the wife likes to watch the ball drop on tv and have a New Year's kiss. 38 years and counting and I'm not rocking that boat.
