    Sport coat and jeans??

Firstly, I think the look is fine. That said, sport coat and jeans look like the wearer should be standing in front of a brick wall telling jokes.

    gunboats and jeans...can't do it

Interesting. I've never heard the term "gunboats" refer to a particular style shoe. I've always heard it used to refer to any shoe that made your feet look big, as in "that's quite a set of gunboats you've got there."

Trolley Strings -- When did they stop

My new Akubra Campdraft has a wind trolley, as others have noted. I also have a Biltmore Panama about 15 years old that came with one. So, they never really went away but I agree that on less expensive hats it's probably less common to see them.

The sad case of the pipe smoker and the pot heads.

As long as it was a cheap cigar. :p

The sad case of the pipe smoker and the pot heads.

I can honestly say that I've never had anyone mistake my pipe tobacco for pot - not even in the 60's. Let alone a cigar. :eusa_doh:

    Very Very Short Stories

It was a dark and stormy night. I knew I'd have to buy a new hat in the morning. But that's another story.

    Would you, if you could?

I think most people who want to live in the past want to live in a movie set in an idealized past, not the actual past.

    Crushable Stetsons at Dillards

Picked up a brown one at the Dillard's in Chapel Hill this morning. $58. They only had 4 brown ones in large and medium. Looks just ok I'd say. Not the worst hat I have. I'll reserve it for cold bad weather when I really don't want to wear a much better fur felt out.

    What's a wind trolley?

A couple of hats I bought recently have come with functioning wind trolleys. My Akubra Campdraft has one. At first I thought it was just decorative, but after messing around with it a little I figured out it was functional. Haven't actually used it though. I guess I only ever saw them in...

    Fountain pens - ostentatious?

I'm not sure that the perceptions about fountain pens would be the same here as in Australia. Or outside of a boardroom here. In any case, where I work (a university) I doubt anyone would pay any attention to what you're writing with, let alone recognize an expensive pen over an inexpensive one.

    Spelling

Simple, English and American are diverging into two different languages. Just as there are several Romance languages based on Latin there will be a number of languages based on English. And even English as spoken in England will be like Italian is to Latin.

How was music "mixed" back then?

As someone who has both played in bands being recorded and done some recording I much prefer the minimalist approach to miking and mixing a band. A properly placed stereo pair in a good hall recording a single take gives a much more natural recording (to me) than close miking each instrument...
