Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I still use place-mats for dinner. If nothing else, they catch dropped food and stuff that might damage the table-surface.

Golden Era Things You've Revived Or Repaired For Use

The thing I hate about plastic basins is that they don't have the STRENGTH to hold water. Literally. You fill it up, you pick it up, the damn plastic warps under the weight of the water, and it either bends out of shape and spills water EVERYWHERE, or it cracks from the warping and just implodes...

    Depressed by the modern world

Quite possibly. Or something along those lines, at any rate. I think it's got something to do with the fact that people don't have courage anymore. Now I admit that's a very broad brushstroke, but what I mean by that is that people don't have the balls to just stand up and say: "This looks...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I preferred chalkboards purely because white on black is easier for me to read because of my eyesight. Black on white is impossible. Especially when you count in the reflective properties of whiteboards.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

When I was in school, it was always "school grounds" or "School yard". "Campus" was occasionally used, but it generally referred more to universities. Something else that has disappeared during my lifetime. I forget if I mentioned this before, I don't think so... - Chalkboards in...

    Depressed by the modern world

That is exactly what I mean. Modern cars all look the same to me. Which is, I guess, what I meant by 'blandness' (or whatever word it was I used in my previous posting on the subject). Now you could argue that cars of the 20s, 30s, 50s, etc, all "looked the same" as well, but I believe there...

    Depressed by the modern world

My issue with modern cars is that they either look really bland, or they look all identical, or they look...what's the term...ostentatious? Arrogant? Show-offy? Older cars, even the cheap ones, had style and class. Today, you have a cheap Ford, and it looks...like a cheap Ford. Back then, if...

50s car-styling is about where it ends for me. After that, all the "styles" just make no sense to me. But then it may be because I'm not a car-person. Postwar cars were heavily influenced by rocketry, sci-fi, space-travel, nuclear threats and so-forth. I seem to recall a friend of mine telling...

    1938: Advice to Theatre Managers

I think cartoons were, yes. From what I've seen (and I'm a big fan of vintage cartoons), is that the average cartoon short was about 7-10 minutes long. Long enough for opening credits, a short story, a few giggles and laughs, and then a pause before the movie starts. Disney-Pixar is the only...

Automobile bodystyles of the 20s and 30s are probably not as popular today because their, admittedly, rather boxy profiles, mean that there's a lot of air-resistance. Air resistance means more fuel burnt. Sleeker bodystyles reduce drag and air-resistance, and therefore improve fuel-efficiency...

I've seen a few other forums which are similar to the FL. But none of them really held my interest like the Lounge has. The Lounge has that mix of Experience, Gentility, Advice, Style, History, Fashion, intelligent discussion and possibly...other things...which I can't immediately...

    Anybody Else Collect Sewing Machines?

Give that thing enough thread, and you could sew up the universe!! When my grandmother ran her clothing-shop, they all used residential Singers; Model 15s or similar. Like this: When my gran closed her shop in the 80s, all the machines were given away to my aunts and cousins, or else...

    Depressed by the modern world

The ridiculous nature of things that we have these days just irritates me so much. And the way people talk about them like their lives depend on them. I don't NEED a mobile phone. If I had my choice, I wouldn't have one. But my parents insist I carry one around. Fine. I know friends of mine...

    Depressed by the modern world

The one BIG issue that I have with the world today, is that nobody knows what REAL QUALITY is anymore. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", and "they don't make 'em like they used to" are two phrases which have become more and more pertinent to the 21st century society. These days, nothing is...

Cleaning a Panama (Is this even POSSIBLE?)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! In the end, I used regular liquid handsoap, and a toothbrush and some good scrubbing. It seems to have done the trick. I'm not worried about it getting wet. It's already been soaked through once, during a monsoon in Singapore, so I figured a little tapwater...

1930's Men's White Linen Two-Piece Double Breasted Belt Back Suit

I think that suit would fit me if I took up the hems on the trousers. But the width of the shoulders in the coat is a BIT much, I think. At any rate, the price scared me off before the measurements did.

    Briefcases

I've always liked those old-style double-strap leather satchel-bags, but I've never had the chance to buy one. The ones I usually see are the modern ones with the fake straps, which are actually magnetic click-on straps. Which isn't really what I want.
