    The Ration Book Diet

Pasty goop from a can...potatoes by the ton...bitter stories of bitter herbs...sponge-like tendrils...how could you help hating vegatables? May a chef's salad, steamed asparagus with hollandaise sauce, sweet potato fries and fresh pumpkin pie help you put your dreadful childhood memories...

Cheap Greens My parents ate lamb's quarters during the Depression; I guess a lot of people did. They're actually pretty good. You can also eat dandelion greens and nasturtiums.

    Favorite Decade?

Well, I can't listen to Internet radio at work and I don't have the Internet at home. But there is a local station that plays a program called "Sounds of Sinatra" (formerly Franka and Friends, I think) and there's R&B Jukebox on another station on Saturday night. But I'm usually not home then.

    Favorite Decade?

If there were a radio station that played all 50s, I'd love it. But the only 50s music that gets played on the radio (in general) is pop. I do like that, but there was also Basie, Sinatra, Ella, Sarah Vaughan, R&B musicians, and a bunch of others that I love, but perhaps don't appeal to...

    The Ration Book Diet

No fruit or vegetables--sounds like the Atkins Diet. Fitness expert Bill Phillips--whose Body for Life plan I follow--says he's tried that approach and felt cranky while he was on it, and has seen others look and feel depressed when they follow Atkins. I too find that what I eat has a huge...

    The Ration Book Diet

I've noticed that eating vegetables (greens, etc., not starchy ones) improves my mood. They contain lots of little nutrients and substances that you need to look and feel healthy. A nutritious dip that I like is to mix cottage cheese and plain, low fat yogurt and some green onion and spices...

Fresh Pumpkin I guess our mothers went to the same cooking school. lol I believe canned foods were overcooked to prevent food poisoning. And canning non-acid foods requires cooking for a long time at a high pressure to begin with. Lizzie, I bet you've never had the treat of pumpkin pie...

    The Ration Book Diet

Congratulations on losing weight and drinking less soda. It's not easy. I, too, often like the same things over and over again. I ate Life cereal every day for years. But I think it might have contributed to some food sensitivities that I now have. When you say you don't really like...

    Is it 2008 or 1958?? - Retro marriage, 21st century-style

It is work, and it is valuable. At my house, a lot of the stuff, like frequent cleaning, weeding, fine cooking, just doesn't always get done since I work all day. I don't know how many SAHMs have a life insurance policy, but they all should. Hiring a nanny and engaging a cleaning service...

    Is it 2008 or 1958?? - Retro marriage, 21st century-style

If you enter a marriage where you come in with much more net worth than your spouse, you might want to be careful about comingling assets. If things don't work out, you might end up leaving poorer than you when you went in. As for a homemaker/SAHM being worth $213,000...if someone placed an...

    Is it 2008 or 1958?? - Retro marriage, 21st century-style

There was a thread on this article in the Golden Era section. It turned out that the ladies were very much misrepresented in the article.

    The Ration Book Diet

It's possible to lose weight and get bigger. It happens if you lose muscle and gain fat, because fat weighs less by volume than muscle. Sufficient protein and exercise help you put on muscle. Lots of carbohydrates (I see that grain and cereals are unlimited in the rations) and too little...

This thread might interest you: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=24678 I, too, have unlimited access to Coca-Cola at work--and I loved Coke. The fizz, the taste, the happy little burst of energy it gives you--I'm actually smiling just thinking about it. But it wrought havoc...

    Advice To The Working Gal

Most nights, I come home "dog tired" but make myself work out anyway. It turns out I'm rarely "too tired" to exercise--and I've heard others say the same thing. I usually go out Friday night, too; it's a matter of knowing when I'm so tired I won't have any fun and when I just have to make myself...

Any good sights around Bellingham Washington?

My father used to live there. He and his family moved to Washington state in the 40s to find work. His mother worked as a welding inspector on aircraft carriers in the shipyards, and his aunts, uncles and cousins got jobs in the apple orchards. Some of their descendants still work in the...

    Was Your Hometown Retro?

Sounds terrific. The city where I live isn't quite that good. Right now, there's a lot of vacant properties on Broadway. There's the Gothic Theater, but the acts there aren't my cup of tea. For me, there's no good neighborhhood place to hang out. :(

    Old Building ?

If they replace 80% of the building, aren't they going to basically have a new building anyway? If 80% new is OK, why not 100%? And of course the council can OK the demo "right off the bat." There's no need to use this man to prove a point.

    Is it 2008 or 1958?? - Retro marriage, 21st century-style

One earner per household = less money per household. Less money per household = less demand for products and services (especially with a homemaker performing most services her family needs). Less demand = fewer jobs. It would probably be a wash.

    Was Your Hometown Retro?

No, I grew up west of Littleton and went to Columbine HS. Now I live in Englewood. Not exactly Mayberry, but it seems there's a lot less crime here than in my parents' more upscale neighborhood. There are too many people sitting on porches or looking out the window or taking care of their yards...
