Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

Hi James, Yes, I have! I brought it home, cleaned it up, sharpened it, stropped it, and had a quick scrape yesterday morning. It was very nice. It seems to be a top-quality blade. As it should be, if it's made for the royal family :)

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

A rather unassuming little toy. This is my Joseph Rodgers & Sons straight razor from the 1910s or 20s, I believe. It's marked "Cutlers to Their Majesties". That's either Edward and Alexandra, or George and Mary. Not sure which one. I suspect, it's the former. Unless someone here can show otherwise?

Some Great Things About My State (Or Regional Area) Are...

I don't know what you can say about my town... - Melbourne has the largest tramway/streetcar system in the Southern Hemisphere. Established in 1885, the streetcars were originally cable-pulled trolleys, much like the ones in San Francisco. ...but the public transport still sucks. - Melbourne...

    How to Clean Ties...?

I had this issue a couple of years back. What I did was put the tie in a bucket of very warm/hot water, with washing-powder or liquid soap. Soak it, scrub it. Let it sit for a day. Take it out. Rinse thoroughly, and then let it hang (like on a towel-bar) and drip dry. It worked for me. The tie...

In what era were vest popular for men?

Hi Hal, The whole heating thing can be pretty annoying. And then I've seen such extremes of clothing that it just baffles me. When I was in university, I used to move around the campus in winter with my trenchcoat to keep me warm. And I saw guys moving around with just a singlet and shorts...

    BBC's Ripper street

If I didn't like the show, I wouldn't have bothered to comment. I was merely making an observation. You can put down the gun now.

    Vintage in 1949

Fascinating stuff to watch. The beard contest thing was funny.

    BBC's Ripper street

I hadn't heard about the second series! I very much enjoyed the first. I think the second will be great. The shotgun isn't the only inaccuracy. Why do they have an 1894 Oliver typewriter in 1889?

    What are you listening to?

"I'm Sailing on a Sunbeam", from 1929. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZYdw4nrf78 This song plays at the end of the final episode of Season One of "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries". Eagerly awaiting the premier of Season Two, sometime soon...

In what era were vest popular for men?

I personally think that the decline of the vest was a result of war-rationing, and improved heating. For most of history, if it was cold outside, it was also cold inside. Buildings had little insulation or heating (unless you count fireplaces). And often, it was colder inside than it was...

Terminology: US vs. UK - 1942

Some Brits I'm sure, still use 'Smashing'. The others, I'm less convinced about. Corking, I certainly haven't heard in recent times. The Baron is right though. It all sounds rather Wodehouseish, wot?

Terminology: US vs. UK - 1942

I wasn't aware that anybody still used the word "smalls" anymore. I always thought that was a rather antiquated term? "Undewear", "Undergarments", "Undershorts", and variations thereof, maybe. But "smalls"? That one is news to me.

"Thirty Things that Need to Stage a Comeback"

I find I generally collect vintage/-style desktop things and writing things. I'd love a desktop typewriter, but I'd never be able to afford one at the moment. And I don't really have the desk-space for it.

"Thirty Things that Need to Stage a Comeback"

The sewing-machines thing was a bit of an accident, really. It started as an experiment with my late grandmother's Singer, and kinda snowballed from there...

    cloaks

Outside of a really heavy blizzard or harsh European/Canadian winters, I don't see a situation where you could really wear one these days. Although I don't deny that they are really really awesome. Under the right circumstances, I'd probably put one on in a heartbeat.
