    A vintage radio cheat

Most of the materials I already had on hand. The mini-amps can be found on ebay for cheap sometimes. Other than that I used a pair of outdoor speakers I found several years ago at Pic N' Save for $15, a CD/mp3 player (usually around $25), and a piece of white melamine I already had on hand...

    A vintage radio cheat

This is too much of a cheat to show it in the "Show Us Your Radios" thread but, since a proper vintage radio hasn't shown itself to me at a price I can afford, it works for me. I found the carcass of an old Silvertone radio/record changer combination while cleaning out the rafters of my...

    Unpopular music opinions

Just got back from shopping an antique store with speakers blasting what passes for country music these days. Sure killed the enjoyment I usually get from browsing antique stores. Can you say formulaic? Very hard to tell when one drawling song ended and another began. Unfortunately that type...

Woody Allen and Vintage Period Films

I've grown a bit tired of the much older man gets romantically involved with a woman a third of his age theme that shows up in so many of his movies, and his last half dozen or so have been duds, but I do respect his taste in music. It's not really a Woody Allen movie per se but this morning I...

    Show us your TIES

    Show us your TIES

Here's my latest find from Salvation Army for 53 cents. Unfortunately the flash obliterated the shades of light blue in the shields and accented the swirly background which is actually all navy blue and just woven into the fabric. What do they call it when they do that, a jacquard? The only...

A forgotten Golden Era virtue, Thrift

To me a hovel implies disrepair which I think is most unthrifty. To make things last you've got to keep them in good repair.

As A Kid, What Were You Like?

I was shy and liked keeping to myself for the most part although I had a few good friends. I had toys but once I was old enough preferred to go off into the woods and explore. The land across from my house was national forest land then but has since been subdivided into McMansions:(. I was...

A forgotten Golden Era virtue, Thrift

Thanks Rue, just finished watching. It was a very interesting program with some very articulate and knowledgeable people (although I don't think I'd want to be invited to a cocktail party with these people as the only other guests:)). These kind of programs are often so depressing that they...

A forgotten Golden Era virtue, Thrift

The poor already have a means to control their acquisitiveness, it's called being poor. When fossil fuels dwindle down to scarcity, as any finite resource that is in demand finally does, rich and poor will be in the same leaky boat.

A forgotten Golden Era virtue, Thrift

I was at the library yesterday reading the most recent National Geographic whose cover story was about the world passing the 7 billion population mark this next year. I don't have the magazine at hand as I write and I'm not good at remembering figures but one of the primary concerns the article...

If I cared enough to do it I think I could get one station with a converter box and an antenna but most of the programs I'm interested in on PBS are now available on-line. As for the rest of TV, we haven't watched it in 15 years and, when I see what's available on the rare occasion I have access...

    1930's and 1940's Household Products

It should be noted that the Flit account was an early success for Theodore Geisel who went on to much success as children's book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss.

Before the HD conversion we were still able to get one channel for free. Luckily it was PBS and had some decent programming. After the conversion, even with a converter box, we could get nothing. So we're done with TV. We bought a video projector and watch DVDs from the library instead...
